MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL LIANG AGUIRRE

spelling bee

Dear Oyster-Adams Families:

Welcome to our new Weekly Bulletin!   I hope you will find it easy to use and full of information you want and need from the school.  We decided to give our "Friday Folder" this face-lift to reduce the number of steps and links involved, to provide a more engaging set of information and, down the line, to create dynamic "bulletin boards" we can use to stay connected with each other.

Let me walk you through the new Bulletin.  Each week you will find:
  • Message from Principal Liang Aguirre - an opportunity for me to share some brief thoughts with you, and highlight events and issues of interest.
  • News! - this section will give you brief information on important activities and events upcoming in the next week or two.   If there is additional information or a flier on any of these items, a link will be provided.
  • Updates - this section is for program or committee work, such as the middle school/intermediate campus updates I have been sending you, or OCC or LSRT information.  To increase readership, we may keep an update posted until a new one is available, so be sure to check the date to see what's current.
  • Next Week's Activities - this section provides a day-by-day listing of the week's regularly scheduled before and after school activities (such as basketball practice or tutoring) in all grades, PK-8.
  • After School Program News - this section is for announcements that affect only after school program participants.  After School Program announcements that affect the whole school community (such as fundraisers, classes that are open to all, etc.) will be posted in the News! section.
  • Class News - this section is under construction.  Our hope is to eventually use it to post class-specific information, and requests from teachers and room parents.  We are discussing the best way to manage this and hope to activate this section of the Bulletin soon.
  • Science News - this section will provide any updates from our science specialists (both elementary and middle school). At times, they may also provide information relevant web sites, local science-related exhibits and highlights of our expanding science curriculum.
  • Master Calendar - running down the left side of this email you will see a month-by-month list of major events, school holidays, report cards, teacher conference days, etc.
Please note that you can jump to, and between, all of these sections by using the hyperlinks in the top, left-hand corner of the email.   In the weeks ahead, our goal is to add listings of upcoming events and activities around the city, and other topics of interest.

We plan to continually update the photos in the Bulletin, so please keep on sending yours to our Technology Coordinator, Ms. Mohammad at Melissa.mohammed@dc.gov .  Finally, we will soon switch all of our mid-week announcements (what comes to you via the escuelaoyster listserv) to a similar format, so be on the lookout for this change.

Finally, while we are hoping to reduce the amount of paper sent home every week, we will, on occasion, need to send home fliers with your child.  Therefore, please continue to check your child's backpack regularly for any paper notices.

I am eager for your feedback on the new Weekly Bulletin -- what you think about it and how it can be improved.  I also ask for your patience as we work out the inevitable kinks that come with launching something new.   Finally, I'd like to thank the many people who have been working with me on
this: Trish Mitchell, Margaret Ernst, Kathy Vincent, Julia Aymerich, Claire Taylor, Wendy Jacobson, Seth Green, Maria Elena Nawar, Cristina Mossi and Melissa Mohammed.

All the best, and happy reading!

Monica Liang Aguirre
Principal

Spelling Bee Update
Oyster-Adams 6th graders go to Citywide!  We are delighted to announce that Jacob Korn and Quinn Gavin came in 1st and 2nd place respectively in the Regional Cluster II Spelling Bee on Wednesday.  Competing against 10 other schools, the boys battled their way through 11 rounds. The top six spellers from each of the 5 cluster competitions will continue to the next round. Seventh grader Michael Song also gave a strong performance but did not make it through to be one of the final six. Jacob and Quinn will advance to the Citywide competition in March.  Congratulations to Jacob, Michael, and Quinn for representing Oyster Adams so well; and thanks last year's Oyster-Adams champion, Stephanie Guzman, for her guidance and study sessions to support the team!

Chess Champions
Congratulations to the Oyster-Adams Chess Team!  Our team won   the DC Chess Challenge VI at the US Chess Center last Saturday, defeating eight other Washington DC schools.  Team members are:  Sophia Claman, Julia Haskins, Claire Walker, Tusia Kolodziej, Danyel Tharakan, Maria Aschenbrener and Jane Schlesinger.  Sophia also won a merit award for her fine play.  Thank you and congratulations to our Chess Instructor, Mr. Goralski!

Oyster-Adams Auction is around the corner!
Please check your child's backpack for the Auction Packets that were sent home this week.  This packet contains important information about this year's auction, how to make a donation and how to purchase an ad in the auction program.  Please keep an eye out for the packet.  Thank you for supporting this important fundraiser for the school.

Monarch Sister Schools Program to be launched.  We need your help!

A team of Oyster Adams educators/administrators is currently working to integrate an exciting program -- The Monarch Sister Schools Program -- into our science/math curriculum. The Monarch Sister Schools Program (MSSP) is an initiative to involve school children across North America in the protection and restoration of the habitat of the Monarch butterfly, including its threatened winter forest habitat in the highlands of central Mexico and its disappearing milkweed habitat along its migratory "flyway" from Mexico to Canada.

In order for our participation in this program to be successful and for this to become a permanent component of our dual-language program, we need two energetic parent leaders to join our team.

Your contribution to the team could include: Short term -- coordinating community involvement in the creation of our Monarch garden at the Oyster campus (this year/April); coordinating of a schedule for garden watering/maintenance;  assisting with planning of special fund raising activities to allow for purchase of needed materials;  Possible long-term -- providing support/coordination for future eco-tours for Oyster Adams students to Mexico.

We need at least one native Spanish speaker and one native English speaker.

For further information about this program, please visit www.monarchsisterschools.org.  To join our team, please speak with our project leader, Pam Ross (room 415/or email pamela.ross@dc.gov ).

Frisbee After-School Club for 3rd and 4th graders!
An after-school Frisbee club will be offered for 3rd and 4th graders from March 10- May 28th.  Please click on the link below to download the registration form.

Frisbee Club Registration Form

Playground construction at the Intermediate Campus will start on Monday, February 23!  Many, many thanks to the relentless efforts of Maureen Diner and Amy Wind, whose tenacity and persuasive powers have been instrumental in making this project finally take off.
As you know, construction means no more parking at the Intermediate Campus. Maureen Diner has secured free parking for staff in nearby parking facilities.  Also, the city has agreed to permanently re-zone the front of the school to no parking from 7 a.m. - 9 a.m. and from 2:30 - 6 p.m. This will reduce the heavy traffic jams we have during drop off and pick-up and ensure greater student safety. Please note that no one will be able to park there during these hours. You will risk a parking ticket if you leave your vehicle unattended during those times.

Infinity Wellness:
The companyInfinity Wellness will begin working with our 5th-8th grade students during recess on Monday to ensure all students have an opportunity to be active during recess everyday. During each of the two recess sessions, one grade level (4th or 5th, 6th or 7th/8th) will use available spaces inside and outside the school (front of the building, hallways, dance classroom, etc.) to get some exercise. (The other grade level will be in the gymnasium.)

Intermediate Campus Lunches!

The Intermediate Campus finally has the new lunches! Students can purchase lunch for $1.50 a day. We recommend that parents pay for a week or month of lunches by seeing Ms. Bell in the cafeteria. You may write checks to the "DC Treasurer."

Lost and Found

We have been working with the students to have them re-claim all of the items that have ended up in the lost and found since the winter vacation. Please remind your child to look for any lost items and write their name on their lunch boxes, jackets and anything else that could be easily lost.

Peace Corps Week!

Middle school students will be visited by Peace Corps alumni on Monday, February 23, in celebration of Peace Corps Week. Alumni will speak to the students in Spanish about their experiences in Latin and South America for 30 minutes at the beginning of school.

NAEP
Students in the 4th & 8th grade will participate in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) on Wednesday, February 25.  NAEP is given by the U.S. Department of Education and tells us what American students know and can do in key subject areas. Students will be tested in math starting at 9 a.m. and should be done by 11 a.m. Please make sure your 4th and 8th graders arrive on time.

Science Fair
The Middle School Science Fair is next week. The schedule is as follows:
·    Monday, February 23: Set-Up
·    Tuesday, February 24: Judging
·    Wednesday, February 25: open to parents from noon to 6 p.m.
·    Thursday, February 26: open to parents from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Sports
All Intermediate Campus basketball players and cheerleaders are invited to attend a celebration of our first season at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, March 4. Dinner will be served. Any parents who are interested in helping to plan
the celebration can contact Wendy Jacobsen at wendy.jacobson@verizon.net.

The Colgate Bright Smiles Van has been re-scheduled to come to the Intermediate Campus on March 10.

6th Grade Parents:

Please review the parent-teacher conference schedule for Friday, February 27. If you have not scheduled a conference yet, please contact Sandi Baer at (202) 673-7311 or sandi.baer@dc.gov <mailto:sandi.baer@dc.gov>  with a few choices of times from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m., (no meetings scheduled from 1 - 2 p.m).

Next week in SHINE: Students will define and explore the concept of "values". Students will identify their own values by creating "I Am" poems.
