MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL LIANG AGUIRRE

May 1, 2009

Dear Parents:

The recent outbreak of swine flu (H1-N1 flu) has prompted schools nationwide to take extra precautions to ensure the health and safety of our students and community.

This week, both nurses at both campuses have met with all of the classes to review proper procedures to stay healthy.

We are asking for your help in the following ways:

1) Encourage the following practices with your children at home and at school:

  • Washing hands every time after using the bathroom, before eating, and when coming inside after playing outside;
  • Coughing and sneezing into sleeves, rather then into hands; and
  • Eating only their own food and not sharing lunches at school.

2) Do not send your child to school if he or she has a fever of 100 degrees F or higher, a cough, vomiting or diarrhea.  Please call the nurse to notify her of any illness.

3) Finally, since Oyster-Adams is such an international community, we ask that you inform the school nurses if you or members of your family have traveled to an area where there are is an outbreak of H1N1 flu cases, and if there is any possibility of you being exposed.  As we work to protect our school community, we also ask that you or your children not come to the school if there is any possibility that you may have been exposed.

Thank you very much for your help.

All the best,

-Monica Liang-Aguirre

It's Fiesta Time!  We hope that your family is coming to the Fiesta on Saturday May 2nd, from noon to 4 pm.  Here are some details for the afternoon.

Tickets will be sold in the front hall of the Oyster building.  Tickets will cost 50 cents each.  We will not be selling bracelets this year.  The cost of all games and activities will range from one ticket to three tickets.  For example, the Duck Pond, Bingo, and Egg and Spoon Race will each cost one ticket.  The Face Painting and Bean Bag Toss will each cost two tickets.  The Moon Bounce, Fun Slide and Dunk Tank will each cost three tickets.  The games and activities will be on the field and the lower playground.  The Dunk Tank will be in the circle.

Food: Drinks, popcorn, snow cones and cotton candy will each cost two tickets and the cost for hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, pupusas and the International Cafe will be posted.  The Grill, pupusas and carnival food will be on the basketball court and the International Cafe will be in the cafeteria.

Entertainment: We have entertainment planned, which will be held in the cafeteria.  Our entertainment will be the presentation of Ballet "Los Quetzales," Songs with Ms. Magdalena Saavedra and Zumba with Ms. Ibis Villegas.  The entertainment schedule will be posted at the ticket table and in the cafeteria.

The raffle drawing will be held at 4 pm in the cafeteria.

In addition there will be opportunities to purchase Oyster-Adams beach towels, tote bags and t-shirts.

We still need help at the Grill.  If you are able to help at the Grill, please sign up on the bulletin board in the front hall at the Oyster building (or stop by the Grill and find out when help is needed!).

We look forward to seeing everyone on Saturday for a wonderful Fiesta.

K-5 Science Fair -- Final Details.  Next week's K-5 Science Fair will be held in the Primary Campus gym.

Project drop-off:
  • Students in grades K-3 should give their projects to their classroom teacher, or bring them directly to the gym  on Monday May 4 between 8am and 11am or between 2:30 and 4pm.
  • Students in grades 4 and 5 who can bring their projects directly to the primary campus either on Friday May 3 between 3:30 and 6:30, or during the above time slots on Monday May 4 should please do so.  4th and 5th grade students can also bring their projects to their classroom teachers by Monday morning and room parents will ensure the projects are transported to the primary campus.
  • PLEASE NOTE:  No projects can be accepted after 4:00 p.m. on Monday May 4.  Projects that come in after this time will not be judged and cannot be eligible for the citywide science fair.

The 4th and 5th graders will travel for judging according to the following schedule:

  • 4th Grade: Tuesday morning, May 5
  • 5th Grade: Wednesday morning, May 6
If you would like to drop your child off at the Primary Campus instead of the Intermediate Campus on their day to be at the Science Fair, please check off the appropriate box on the permission slip your child brings home. We need to know how many students will start their day at each campus to ensure we have the right number of teachers at each campus.

End of the fair:

Please pick up Science Fair projects at the end of the Science Fair, after school in the Oyster gymnasium on Friday, May 8, unless your teacher/room parents make other arrangements.

Contact Science Fair Committee members Deborah Durham-Vichr, ddvichr@yahoo.com, or Trish Mitchell, trish123m@gmail.com, with questions or for special arrangements.

The Primary Campus is starting a Girl Scout troop! The first gathering will be from 3:15-5 p.m., Friday, May 8 (the meeting location will be posted in the front hall).  This meeting is aimed at first and second grade girls -- to give them a taste of what's to come in the fall -- and any of their parents who can make it. Parents must sign a permission form, available in the Primary Campus office, in order for their daughters to participate. The first meeting will focus on Hispanic heritage and offer the girls a chance to earn their first patch. It will include music, dancing, art and the exploration of two Hispanic heroines. Contact Primary Campus parent Jodi Enda for more information at jodi.enda@comcast.net

Summer School is coming!  Summer is quickly approaching. It's time to start thinking about your child's summer plans. We are excited to announce that Oyster-Adams has been designated a summer school site, meaning that students who are currently in kindergarten through 8th grade can attend summer school at the Intermediate (Adams) Campus (located at 2020 19th Street, NW).

There are two programs (based on a student's current school grade) running from June 29 - August 5. Both are free for all students who will also be served breakfast, lunch and a snack (for the elementary students who stay for the afterschool enrichment program):

  • The elementary summer school program (kindergarten through 6th) will have two parts: a morning academic program (8:30 a.m. - 1 p.m.) followed by an afterschool enrichment program (until 5:30 p.m.). You may enroll your child in either of the sessions as well as both.
  • The middle schools (7th and 8th only) will have a morning summer school program but not an afternoon session.
We will be sending a letter and registration form home with students whose teachers recommend that they attend summer school for additional assistance in math and reading (English only).

DON'T MISS OYSTER-ADAMS SPRING COCKTAIL PARTY TO BENEFIT OYSTER CREATIVE ACTIVITIES (OCA) SCHOLARSHIP FUND - - Friday, May 8, 6:00-8:30pm, hosted by the Embassy of Switzerland (2900 Cathedral Avenue, NW) . Only $25/person, $40/couple.  If you can't come, contribute to tickets for O-A teachers and staff.  Childcare for Oyster-Adams students, including a pizza dinner and movie, at the Oyster building, only $5/family.  Tickets on sale in the mornings at both campuses or reserve by email and pick-up at the door, jbk2805@yahoo.com.  Great opportunity to have fun with O-A parents at a very reasonable price and also do good.

UPDATES

Update from Assistant Principal Ibis Villegas

May 1, 2009

A Proud Tradition Returns to Oyster-Adams!

Did you know...
  • That Oyster Adams has a treasured 18 year history of holding a yearly Spanish language poetry contest?
  • That Laura Kleinmann, Eduardo Gamarra and Nora Bustios have been meeting with the Office of Bilingual Education to organize a similar but new event called "Celebracion de la Poesia" that includes 10 DC Public Schools?
  • That this new Poetry Festival scheduled for June includes the renowned poet Alma Flor Ada?
  • hat this "Celebracion de la Poesia" will showcase Oyster Adams students?
  • That the Office of Bilingual Education will publish an anthology of the poems presented at the "Celebracion de la Poesia"?
Please be sure to speak with your child's Spanish teacher and/or Ms. Kleinmann, Sra. Bustios or Sr. Gamarra for more information. In the meantime, I will also keep the school community informed of the latest developments in this regard. This is an exciting time at Oyster Adams. It is a time that celebrates time-honored traditions while moving forward with new plans for our dual-language model.

The lyrics to the song "Turn, Turn, Turn" by the Byrds come to mind:

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:

A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;

A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;

A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;

A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;

A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;

A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;

A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.

MIDDLE SCHOOL/INTERMEDIATE CAMPUS UPDATE

May 1, 2009

Students in the News: Congratulations to 5th grader Allie Littleton for being named one of the "10 Who Are 10." She will be presented with a $2,500 scholarship in a special ceremony in May for her creative and well-researched essay focused on how allowing families to rent-out rooms in their homes to other families would be good for our environment.

Fillmore Arts Show: All students in grades 5th - 8th will have a piece of artwork displayed in the Fillmore Student Art Show, Friday, May 8, from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. at Fillmore West, 1819 35th Street, NW, 3rd floor. This is a great opportunity for students to show off all of the wonderful masterpieces they've created this year under the guidance of Miss Pat.

DC Chess Challenge VII: Our wonderful chess instructor - Mr. G - invites 4th graders and other graduates of his chess instruction (and any other students who love to play chess) to participate in the DC Chess Challenge VII on Saturday, May 2, from 1 - 4 p.m. at the U.S. Chess Center, 1501 M Street, NW. Students will be grouped K-6th and 7th-12th.

This week in Shine: (The students did not have SHINE this week so it is the same lesson as last week.) Students will explore the messages in advertising and song lyrics to become more informed, more discerning consumers of media.
