MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL LIANG AGUIRRE The Principal had a Doctor's note excusing her from the dunk tank at Fiesta.
May 8, 2009
Dear Parents:
Beginning in March, every Thursday afternoon, a group of teachers, parents and I have been interviewing candidates for the myriad of positions we have available for next year. We have added 13 new positions to our staffing and, as always, have some turn around in our existing staff. Amidst everything else that needs to get accomplished at this time of year, I see this responsibility of finding the best teachers and staff as fundamental to our success next year and in the years to come. Research has shown (and we all know from experience) that teacher quality is the most important school-related factor influencing student achievement. So we take this seriously.
So what makes a great Oyster-Adams teacher? Here are some of the things that I might include in a job description:
- Must be a willow tree (ask a teacher what this means here at Oyster-Adams.)
- Must know content/subject area.
- Must believe in Oyster-Adams' mission and be committed to working towards its effective implementation.
- Must be passionate about teaching and working with children.
- Must be able to produce daily 5 hours of engaging, differentiated, standards-based lessons that use scientifically researched strategies and meets the needs of all students.
- Must gather materials and resources for said 5 hours of engaging, differentiated, standards-based lessons that use scientifically researched strategies and meets the needs of all students.
- Must be able to effectively implement said lesson plans.
- Must be able to monitor, adjust and evaluate the effectiveness of lesson plans.
- Must be able to abort all plans with the unexpected happens (fire drill, bloody nose, technology malfunction, students arriving late, etc.)
- Must get to know between 25-450 students-including their strengths, their weaknesses, their families, their learning styles.
- Must be willing to wipe noses, tears, paint, whiteboards and sweat.
- Must stay cool when being yelled at (by a student, or sadly, sometimes a parent)
- Must enjoy hugs (by students, and happily, sometimes by parents)
- Must attend to bureaucratic paper work in a timely fashion.
- Must excel in diplomatic relations.
- Must be willing to ask for help.
- Must be willing to take work home every night.
- Must be willing to come in on weekends (to turn over chicken eggs, for example.)
- Must be able to work independently and closely with colleagues.
- Must be leader and be able to follow directions.
This week was National Teacher Appreciation Week but let's extend this celebration and appreciate the fact that we truly have an outstanding, diverse and committed teaching faculty here at Oyster-Adams. While our teachers are all at a different place on the continuum to becoming a "master teacher," they are all committed to improving their skills and work hard every day meet that end. One of my greatest pleasures this year has been working and learning with Oyster-Adams teachers. They are truly in a league of their own.
If you haven't done so recently, take a moment to thank your child's teacher-I truly believe that they have the most difficult job in the world.
Have a Happy Mother's Day Weekend,
-Monica

Parent-Teacher Conferences are Friday May 15 (school not in session): The last
Parent-Teacher conferences of the 2009-10 school year are scheduled for Friday,
May 15. Please contact your child's teacher(s) to schedule an appointment if
you would like to discuss your child's progress. The teachers will also contact
any parents who they need to meet with based on the child's academics and/or
behavior. DCPS ENROLLMENT FORMS DUE FRIDAY, MAY15th!Please make sure to submit all of your DCPS enrollment forms for next school year by next Friday to either Ms. Viera at the Primary Campus or Susana Oviedo at the Intermediate Campus. IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR CHILD'S IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTSThe DC Department of Health (DOH) has new requirements for immunizations for school year 2009-2010. These include two varicella (chickenpox) immunizations for all students as well as additional immunizations for students in grades 5 and up. The details of the requirements are available at the DCPS and DOH websites. As of April 2009, student records at the primary campus show 37% of all the primary students still need a second varicella immunization. It is possible that some students may have had these, but that we do not yet have a copy of them. Please check with your child's health care provider and if your child has had a second chickenpox immunization, bring a copy to the school nurse. If your child has not yet had the second varicella immunization, schedule an appointment for one with your health care provider. All children must have complete and up to date immunizations before entering school in August. If you have questions, please contact your school nurse. Medication Reminder1. All prescription and over the counter medications must be given to the school nurse and must have a doctor's order. Teachers and school staff can never accept any medications. 2. If a child needs a medication and is going on a field trip, the parent or guardian must accompany the student and carry and administer the medication. Teachers and staff cannot carry or administer medications for a student. If you have any questions, please contact the school nurse. Bring a Dish on
Friday May 15th -- This Year's

staff! On May 15 (parent-teacher
conference day) please bring a dish-main courses, fruits, salads, desserts,
drinks-to the teachers' lounge at either (or both!) campuses by 11:00 a.m. You can retrieve any serving plates on Monday
in the parent room at Oyster or in the teacher's lounge at Adams. Questions?
Want to help with prep and/or clean-up?

or Alejandra Catalan at 202-547-2102 Summer School: Summer is quickly
approaching. It's time to start thinking about your child's summer plans. We
are excited to announce that Oyster-Adams has been designated a summer school
site, meaning that students who are currently in kindergarten through 8th grade
can attend summer school at the Intermediate (Adams)
Campus (located at 2020 19th
Street, NW).
There are two programs (based on a student's
current school grade) running from June 29 - August 5. Both are free for all
students who will receive breakfast, lunch and a snack (for the elementary
students who stay for the afterschool enrichment program):
- The
elementary summer school program (kindergarten through 6th) will have two
parts: a morning academic program (8:30 a.m. - 1 p.m.) followed by an
afterschool enrichment program (until 5:30 p.m.). You may enroll your child in
either of the sessions as well as both.
-
The
middle schools (7th and 8th only) will have a morning summer school program but
not an afternoon session.
Please
check you child's backpack for a summer school recommendation.
Pledge to keep our students safe. "Safe Cars Means Safe Children: Pace Car" is a program
sponsored by the Washington Area Bicyclist Association to encourage drivers to
adhere to the posted speed limits and treat pedestrians and bicyclists with
respect by sharing the road safely. Oyster-Adams is competing against other schools
to see which one can get the highest percentage of parents to sign and return
the Pace Car "Driver Pledge." Check your child's backpack for a
"Driver's Pledge" form and return it signed by Tuesday May 19 (teachers must hand in the forms by May 20 at 10 am). The class
with the most pledges at each campus will get a pizza party! For more
information, visit http://www.waba.org/pacecar/about.php <http://www.waba.org/pacecar/about.php>
Intermediate campus spruce-up a great success! Many thanks to Greater DC Cares and the 60+
volunteers it recruited, who showed up on a rainy Saturday to help spruce up
the Intermediate Campus! For the second year, the group worked to make the campus
a brighter, more welcoming place - among other tasks, they helped paint the
rusty outdoor security grates covering the first floor windows, finished
painting the railing in front of the school, and worked a magical
transformation of the resource room into a bright and cheerful space. The
biggest Oyster-Adams thanks goes to Katia
Garrett who organized all of this for the school. She not only made sure
the volunteers had impactful projects to work on, she coordinated the pick up
of the right supplies for the projects. Katia's become quite an expert in
choosing paint colors if you're looking to re-paint your home. Thanks also to
the parents who helped by picking up the supplies and showing up early Saturday
morning to help ready things for the volunteers: Mike Fay, Gustavo Gatti, Joel Korn, Sherrill Sanger, and Serena
Wiltshire. Save the date!May 18-May 24: Oyster/Adams Annual Screen-Free Week: pledge sheets will be distributed in both
libraries and to teachers/staff next week. May 29- June 3: Spanish Poetry celebrations at Oyster-Adams and as part of a DCPS-wide program. More information coming soon. June 8-10: Summer Reading Book Fair. Oyster Campus OYSTER-ADAMS SPRING COCKTAIL PARTY - Friday, May 8, 6:00-8:30pm. Get a jump on the embassy open house program this

Update from Assistant Principal Ibis Villegas
May 8, 2009
Fiesta Memories
Our
Fiesta celebration was truly a fun-filled family experience. The Pupusa lines
were long (as expected), students were happily wet from the dunking booth (a
cherished tradition for sixth graders and yes Primary Campus children you WILL
get to sixth grade someday), the moon bounce was thrilling (there were lots of
squeals from our children) and the face painting provided an element of magic
and fantasy to the entire event.
Since
I was a part of the entertainment, I'll take a moment to reflect on the special
memories associated with the Fiesta entertainment. We need to give a collective
shout-out to Oyster Adams students Linda Catalan, Paloma Catalan, Samuel
Catalan, Citaly Cruz, Caroline Shea and Natalia Rodriguez for their absolutely
beautiful performance. The beauty of
Mexican folkloric dances was alive in all its splendor right in our cafeteria!
Another collective shout out goes to Magdalena Saavedra whose beautiful voice
filled the cafeteria with Spanish songs.
I
noticed the children happily singing along. My own Zumba shout out goes to the
many children, who to my delight, spontaneously jumped on the stage to Zumba
right along with me. It felt as if they simply could not contain their joy and
they HAD to join me as an expression of their youthful exuberance! On behalf of the Oyster Adams "thank you"
Fiesta organizers Claudia Martin and Mary Jo Kelly!
MIDDLE SCHOOL/INTERMEDIATE CAMPUS UPDATES
May 8, 2009
Students in the News: 6th grader Garrett Salzman is a winner of the
National Law Day Essay Contest. She
wrote an essay on how law impacts her life.
In her essay, Garrett discussed the role of the 13th and 15th
amendments, and how those laws impact modern voting. In addition, Garrett discussed her own role
in the voting process, and how she played a part in the election of Barack
Obama through the "Young Artists For Obama" group. Garrett will be rewarded on May 8th with a trip
to the Supreme Court, a meeting with the Justices, and a Treasury Bond. 6th grader Hazel Rosenblum-Sellars was also a
participant in the contest.
Fillmore Arts Presentations: All
students in grades 5th - 8th will have a piece of artwork displayed in the
Fillmore Student Art Show, Friday, May 8, from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. at Fillmore
West, 1819 35th Street, NW, 3rd floor. This is a great opportunity for students
to show off all of the wonderful masterpieces they've created this year under
the guidance of Miss Pat.
All
guitar students in grades 5th - 8th will be featured at the Fillmore Spring
Concert, Monday, May 18, at 7 p.m., at the Fillmore/Hardy auditorium, 1819 35th
Street, NW.
Oyster-Adams Talent Show: The Intermediate Campus
student council has been busily working to prepare for the Talent Show,
scheduled for Friday, June 5, at 6 p.m. Students in grades 4 through 8 will
show off their many talents, ranging from dancing and singing to comedy
routines and martial arts. Students who want to participate in the talent show
must rehearse on Thursday, May 14, from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. in the gymnasium at
the Intermediate Campus. Participating students should bring a note from a
parent giving them permission to stay after school on May 14 for rehearsal.
Parking Update: The new parking signs
in front of the school prohibit "standing" in addition to
"parking." That is a mistake that we are working with the city to
correct so that our parents can leave their cars for a minute or two to pick up
their children. We know that some of you have received tickets for
"standing." Please leave a copy of those tickets in the office for
Sandi Baer. We are going to see if there is anything we can do about them but
we can't guarantee anything.
6th Grade Parent-Teacher conferences:
The last Parent-Teacher Conferences of the 2009-10 school year are scheduled
for Friday, May 15. Please contact Sandi Baer (sandi.baer@dc.gov) to schedule
an appointment if you would like to discuss your child's progress with some or
all of the teachers.
This Week in Shine (6th Grade Only):
Students will be split into two groups (male and female) to better understand
what makes a healthy or unhealthy relationship, as well as statutory rape, its
definition and laws.
OCC UPDATES
Amigos de Oyster-Adams
Family Giving Campaign Update
Our generous Oyster-Adams
community has contributed $100,619 to the Family Giving campaign so far this
year. These contributions make a big
difference to the education of all our children, so thank you very much to all
those families who already have made their donation. For those who have yet to
make a contribution, there is still time!
Any amount is appreciated. Pledge cards are available in the
offices at both campuses. Please make your gift today.
Everyone who gave to the
Amigos de Oyster-Adams Family Giving Campaign by April 1 was entered in a
drawing for a special White House tour with Congressman Jim McGovern. The
winners of the drawing are: Paolo Cappellacci and Francesca Manno, parents of Alessandro
Cappellacci in KA. Congratulations to them and thanks to Jim and Lisa
McGovern for their generous gift!
The OCC is looking for
volunteers to co-chair the Amigos de Oyster-Adams Family Giving Campaign next
year. Co-chairing the campaign offers an
opportunity to make a major contribution to the school, as it is Oyster-Adams'
largest fundraiser. If you are
interested, please contact Claire Taylor or Maribel Jimeno.
Oyster-Adams, let's get those receipts turned in!
As part
of its ongoing effort to make its financial procedures more efficient, the OCC
board has adopted a new policy that affects the entire school community.
Parents and teachers, take note: The last date that the OCC will issue
reimbursement checks for the 2008-2009 school year is June 30, 2009. Please
turn in all receipts or authorized requests for funds by Friday May 29, 2009. No payments will be made
after June 30, 2009 unless expressly authorized in advance by the OCC
treasurers. Thank you!
