MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL LIANG AGUIRRE

May 22, 2009

Dear Parents:

A recent incident in the sixth grade is presenting us with the opportunity to consider the phrase "tech-savvy but naïve" and how it applies to our students. A student's personal e-mail account was hacked in to and the hacker sent lewd e-mails to other students who were in her address book. We are currently working with the proper legal authorities to investigate the hacking incident and will be providing students and parents with more information on how to protect young people from internet predators.

Today's students have an array of technology available to them: cell phones, ipods, computers, etc. Our students quickly understand how to use these items and are often more proficient than the adults. However, their ability to self-regulate and self-monitor progresses at a different, and often a slower, pace. Therefore, the phrase "tech-savvy but naïve" applies to our children. This week's incident primarily occurred at students' homes, during what might be called the homework hours, and it reminds us that we must continue to be vigilant with our children's technology use-especially as they get older.

We urge you to strengthen the rules about technology use at home. For example:

1.    Do not enter any private information about yourself or of your family habits online without parental permission.
2.    Do not share your passwords with anyone but your parents. If they have been shared in the past, change them.
3.    Report any unusual emails, chats or other communications immediately to a parent.

Know as many of your child's cyberfriends as possible. Check their online hangout spots regularly, such as their mySpace or Facebook pages. Finally, remind them about some old lessons such as, "nothing is free" so you are not likely to win a free Xbox when you click that blinking box and enter your email address. Instead, you will probably get spam or worse.

Our Technology Coordinator, Melissa Mohammed, is organizing an education program for parents and students in the older grades so we can all become more tech-savvy and tech-safe. This will happen in the coming week.

Enjoy the long weekend to re-energize for the last few weeks of school-they are busy ones!

-Monica Liang Aguirre

Long Live Poetry in Spanish!  Are you ready to celebrate poetry in Spanish? Oyster/Adams is resuscitating our traditional Spanish Poetry Contest on May 29th at both campuses. This year we are honoring to two children's poets in Spanish, Alma Flor Ada and Isabel Campoy. Oyster will have its Spanish Poetry Celebration (not a contest) from 9am to 11 and Adams will have its Spanish Poetry Contest from 1:15pm until 2:30. Then, on the 3rd of June from 10-11:30am the DCPS Office of Bilingual Education will host a Celebration of Poetry in Spanish at Sumner School with representatives from all of the bilingual programs in DCPS. We will know which of out students will participate after May 29th. Please come to Oyster and Adams on the 29th of May to see many of out students express their poetic talent in Spanish.

Oyster-Adams on the agenda.
The May 28 meeting of the Kalorama Citizens Association will feature remarks from Ward One Councilmember Jim Graham, annual election of KCA officers, and a presentation by the Oyster-Adams School leadership and parents on the newly renovated playground behind the school. The Oyster-Adams agenda item is likely to begin around 8:00-8:15.

The meeting will begin at 7:00 pm at Good Will Baptist Church, 1862 Kalorama Road, NW (near the corner of Columbia & Kalorama). Go up the main front steps and bear right to the rear side door. For further information, call Denis James at 202 232-8829 or: denisjames@verizon.net

Need some Glue!
Do you have a gallon bucket of glue (or more) that you can donate to the school?  Mr. Gore, our head custodian, will put it to good use.  If he can get it from the parent community, he won't have to wait  for DCPS to come through with it.  So if you can contribute a large quantity of glue, Mr. Gore will more than happy to take it off your hands!  Please call the primary campus office at 671-3111.

The OA Primary Campus Talent Show is Coming!

  Dear Parents,

Oyster Adams Primary Campus students will celebrate each other's talent, skills and zest for life with an "O-A Idol" Talent Show on Monday, June 15th. This is the last day of the school year and we want to make it a memorable one for our school community. Be sure to note that this is NOT A COMPETITION.  There will be no prizes or awards. Instead, we expect our children to experience the joy of seeing the artistic, creative side that they and their peers possess.
This being said, there will be an audition process that holds participants accountable to ALL the following criteria:
  • The presentation is approved by a parent. A permission slip will be sent home to be signed. This slip must be handed in at the time of the audition.
  • The presentation must take 3 minutes or less.
  • The presentation must demonstrate thoughtful planning/preparation. Let's say for example, that a student knows martial arts and decides to present those skills. This student would plan a short choreography of 3 minutes or less that demonstrates his/her skills in this area. Or, let's say that a student likes to tell jokes. In this instance, a student would practice the presentation skills that go along with telling a joke e.g., pausing for added effect, voice tone etc. Impromptu presentations will not be approved.
  • Whenever music is included, lyrics must be appropriate for students in the primary grades. Music that includes profane language will not be approved.
  • The presentation must fall into one of the following categories: Dancing-Singing (no lip synching)-Playing a musical instrument-Athletic Performance-Drama/Comedy Skit
Auditions will be scheduled June 3rd through June 8th. See Ms. Villegas for details.

COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARD

Hi, I'm Tim Allen.  My son, Daniel Allen-Salas, is a first grader at Oyster-Adams Bilingual School.  On June 6, 2009 I'll be running 45 miles to celebrate my 45th birthday.  That's 53 loops around the Oyster block (Oyster to Open City, past the metro and the Marriott, back down 29th Street to Oyster).

I'd like for you to sponsor me by making a contribution to the Oyster-Adams Community Council (OCC) for each lap I run.  So if you sponsor $2 per lap and I complete the entire 53 laps, that's a $106 contribution to OCC.  To maintain overhead at zero and keep things simple, I'm asking you to contribute directly to OCC via their web page:

http://oysterbilingual.devis.com/SupportOyster/DonateOnline

I will begin the run at 4 AM (yes, 4 AM) on Saturday, June 6 and expect to finish by 1:00 pm.  Sonia and Daniel will be acting as my support crew, and if you would like to come keep them company and watch me run by every nine minutes or so, I encourage you to do so.  If you are a runner, I would like very much to have pacers, especially on the later laps.  Even if you just run a mile with me, I would be very appreciative.  Contact me at TimothyChenAllen@gmail.com if you are interested in being a pacer.

Postings on this bulletin board are limited to items of interest to the Oyster-Adams community, about free or low-cost products, services or events that support the mission of our school.  Please send your notice IN ENGLISH AND IN SPANISH to ana.rodriguez@dc.gov by 4:00 p.m. on Wednesdays.
