MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL LIANG AGUIRRE

May 29, 2009

Dear Parents:

As many of you know, the City Council has proposed an amendment to set aside $27.5 million from the DCPS budget for the upcoming 2009-2010 school year.  The Council is expected to vote on this amendment on June 2nd.

Schools have been notified of the impact that such a reduction would have on individual school budgets.  If the DCPS budget is indeed reduced by $27.5, Oyster-Adams would stand to lose five positions for next year.  Although we continue to actively recruit and interview excellent candidates, we are currently refraining from making formal offers to five of the new positions for next year.

What PARENTS can do:

Since the dispute on the budget revolves around projected number of students for next year, we must prove to the City Council that we expect full enrollment.

PLEASE RETURN YOUR COMPLETED ENROLLMENT FORMS to Evelyn Viera (at the Primary Campus) or Susana Oviedo (at the Intermediate Cmapus) as soon as possible. (And yes, I finally turned mine is as well!)

All enrollment packets must be complete, including residency verification.  The medical forms can be turned in by the start of school.

Thank you for doing your part in helping us preserve the budget we need to best serve our students.

Enjoy your weekend.

-Monica Liang Aguirre

PS:  I hope you can join us next Friday, June 5th at 9AM at the Primary Campus for a small "Parent Celebration."

Safety Survey.  The Safe Routes to School Group would like to learn your thoughts about children walking and biking to school. This survey will take about 5-10 minutes to complete. We ask that each family complete only one survey per school (campus) your children attend. If you have more than one child at the same school (campus), please fill out the survey for the child with the next birthday from today's date.  Click here to take the survey  Your responses will be kept confidential and neither your name nor your child's name will be associated with any results.

Come see the 1st Grade Play: On Thursday, June 4th 1B will present "El Gran Capoquero" from 1-2 pm in the primary campus cafeteria. All are welcome.

UPDATES

Update from Assistant Principal Ibis Villegas

The OA Primary Campus Talent Show is Coming!

  Dear Parents,

Oyster Adams Primary Campus students will celebrate each other's talent, skills and zest for life with an "O-A Idol" Talent Show on Monday, June 15th. This is the last day of the school year and we want to make it a memorable one for our school community. Be sure to note that this is NOT A COMPETITION.  There will be no prizes or awards. Instead, we expect our children to experience the joy of seeing the artistic, creative side that they and their peers possess.
This being said, there will be an audition process that holds participants accountable to ALL the following criteria:
  • The presentation is approved by a parent. A permission slip will be sent home to be signed. This slip must be handed in at the time of the audition.
  • The presentation must take 3 minutes or less.
  • The presentation must demonstrate thoughtful planning/preparation. Let's say for example, that a student knows martial arts and decides to present those skills. This student would plan a short choreography of 3 minutes or less that demonstrates his/her skills in this area. Or, let's say that a student likes to tell jokes. In this instance, a student would practice the presentation skills that go along with telling a joke e.g., pausing for added effect, voice tone etc. Impromptu presentations will not be approved.
  • Whenever music is included, lyrics must be appropriate for students in the primary grades. Music that includes profane language will not be approved.
  • The presentation must fall into one of the following categories: Dancing-Singing (no lip synching)-Playing a musical instrument-Athletic Performance-Drama/Comedy Skit
Auditions will be scheduled June 3rd through June 8th. See Ms. Villegas for details.
