MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL LIANG AGUIRRE

June 5, 2009

Dear Parents:

I'm delighted to announce the City Council and the Chancellor have reached a compromise regarding the projected enrollment for next year.

As a result, all schools will have their full budgets restored for 2009-2010! We are moving forward with the recruitment and hiring of all of our anticipated positions for next year.

Thank you to all who have brought in your enrollment forms.  This good news does not mean to stop enrolling-we must still prove our projected student count in a timely manner.  All enrollment forms are due to by June 15.

As we enter the last full week of school, please remember to scour your house for library books, classroom books, textbooks and other odds and ends that look like they could belong to the school.  We will be placing orders soon for next year's curricular materials and do not want to spend any of our precious funds on unnecessary items.  Thank you for your assistance.

Enjoy the weekend,

-Monica Liang Aguirre

Summer Reading is Around the Corner!  From Ms. Kleinmann: We all know that the brain is a muscle and must be exercised even in the Summer. Reading MUST NOT stop in June and resume in September, That is why this year, like every year, each O/A student will be required to read 4 books over the summer; 2 in Spanish and 2 in English (middle school requirements may vary).

During the week of June 8th, my assistant Sra. Fuentes and I, will be handing out our traditional SR packets. These packets include a letter of introduction, age appropriate SUGGESTED reading lists, and 4 book report forms, 2 in English and 2 in Spanish. We also encourage the kids to join the DC Public Library's Summer Reading Club (happening in all branches). Those that do and bring proof to me in September will be eligible for a raffle of 20 gift certificates to Politics and Prose bookstore.

IN ORDER TO SUPPORT THIS VITAL SCHOOL-WIDE REQUIREMENT AND PROVIDE ACCESS TO QUALITY BOOKS IN SPANISH WE WILL BE HAVING A SMALL BILINGUAL SUMMER READING BOOK FAIR IN OYSTER'S MAIN HALLWAY ON JUNE 8TH-10TH FROM 3:00 UNTIL 6:30 PM. WITH BOOKS FOR PK TO MIDDLE SCHOOL. SEE YOU THERE!

Oyster-Adams Agua = Paz  BUCKET WALK FOR WATER 2009
Join us for Agua=Paz's Walk For Water  on FRIDAY JUNE 12TH at 5:00.  The walk, where club members and other supporters will walk around the track holding large buckets of water to duplicate the difficult journeys taken each day by children of developing countries, will take place at the new track at Adams.  A potluck picnic will begin immediately after the walk until 7 pm.
  • Anyone is eligible to walk, including parents, siblings, etc.
  • Supporters are encouraged to gather pledges for their commitment to "walk" while holding on to a gallon container of water.  Click here for the pledge sheet in English & Spanish and don't forget to BRING YOUR BUCKETS!
  • Agua = Paz teeshirts will be available for sale next week for $20.
Agua=Paz is an Oyster-Adams Service Learning Club that has partnered with the Emmanual Mongalo School in Nicaragua, a community desperate for water, sanitation and hygiene education.  Our year has been amazing, educational and fun.  Our club members have written letters to their peers in Nicaragua; attended and presented at Youth Leadership Conference at the World Bank; attended presentations at National Geographic; met with Jan Eliasson, former Swedish Ambassador and Special Envoy to Darfur, Sudan; met with the Amigos de las Americas program; and through our Wear a Hat for Water, Day raised $630 towards our goal of $1,600.

Dramatic Performance: Several fourth- through eighth-grade students have been working hard to produce a play based on the novels Number the Stars and The Diary of Anne Frank.  The performance will take place in the Intermediate Campus auditorium on Monday, June 8, at 5:30pm.  Please join us in celebrating their hard work!

Songs to Sing, Songs to Play.  Ms.Zvi, our music teacher, invites everyone to come: June 11, 2:00 PM, Oyster cafeteria.

Update from Assistant Principal Ibis Villegas

June 5, 2009

A Time of  Celebration for Hispanics/Latinos

2009 is a very joyful year for Hispanics/Latinos in our country. It is a time when a US President has publicly acknowledged the academic accomplishments of  Hispanic/Latino judge Sonia Sotomayor by nominating her to the US Supreme Court. Her nomination brings Hispanics/Latinos, once again, to the forefront of our national awareness. From my perspective as an educator, we might finally have a Hispanic/Latina Supreme Court Justice with the potential to be a positive role model for countless Hispanic/Latina girls.

The significance of President Obama's selection is far-reaching and includes our school community. At Oyster Adams we take pride in the diversity of our school. That diversity becomes quickly apparent to all who visit us. When I conduct a tour of our school for guests, I commonly state that our cultural richness is highlighted in that our Spanish-speaking faculty comes from all over the world. Our faculty includes teachers from Argentina, Peru, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Spain, Colombia, Panama, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Ecuador. The beauty of Oyster-Adams' school culture is that we embrace the linguistic and cultural differences from each country. Contact enhances tolerance. Tolerance enhances understanding.

The words of our illustrious visitor, Alma Flor Ada ring true now, more than ever, given the imminent changing hue of the highest court in the land:

Latinos
Hispanicos, latinos, hispanos

Vivimos en los Estados Unidos
Hablamos español
Somos dominicanos
Y venezolanos.
Somos salvadoreñas
Y puertorriqueñas.
Somos colombianos
Y ecuatorianos.
Somos uruguayos
Y paraguayas.
Somos cubanos
Y mexicanos,
Mexicoamericanas
Y chicanas.
Y mucho mas.
Decimos con orgullo
El nombre que nos une:
Latino, en el idioma,
Latina, en la cultura.
Hispanicos o
Hispanos,
Siempre orgullosos
De nuestra herencia latina.

Last chance for Zumba!  You are invited...to the fastest-growing alter-school class at Oyster-Adams!  Just in case you haven't heard...just in case you missed the Zumba fun at the Fiesta...just in case you've missed the Friday fun that takes place at 6:15 PM in the Primary Campus...you will have one more chance before the end of the school year. Yes, I'm talking about Zumba. This energetic dance-based exercise class will end on Friday, June 12th with a special guest: former Oyster Adams teacher/salsa percussionist Gary Sosias will come to enchant us with his drumming as we all Zumba to our hearts' content!

This last class represents a dream come true for me...children and their parents exercising and having fun together to the beat of live drums. It just doesn't get any better. You will leave with a smile and burn a few calories along the way. I promise! I want to take a moment to personally thank the many parents who have joined me in this social experiment I have named FaZumba DC. Every week I saw how one by one you made a commitment to join the class. One by one parents came to my office with smiles and positive feedback. This family exercise format is the only one of its kind in the DC area. What I found was that sometimes it was the child who motivated the parent, "I want to Zumba!" and sometimes it was the parent who insisted, "I feel like I'm finally doing something for myself!" Once we gathered in the cafeteria, our cares were carried away with the enticing melodies of merengue, salsa and cumbia. Once again, GRACIAS! Classes will resume next September.

MIDDLE SCHOOL/INTERMEDIATE CAMPUS UPDATES

June 5, 2009

Using our New Parking Lot: In order to build our wonderful new playground, we lost more than 10 parking spaces as compared to the old parking lot. You will also notice that almost all of the spaces are tandem (shared) spaces. We have assigned the spaces to teachers and other staff and ask that you refrain from parking in the lot starting at 7 a.m. until most staff have left at 4:30 p.m. If you do park in the lot after 4:30 p.m., please do not park in such as way as to block another car from being able to leave. Many teachers stay late and we would like them to be able to leave easily.

Using our New Playground: The students are so excited about the new playground! We have noticed that a lot of students who are not signed up for an after-school program are staying after school to use the new facilities. Please be aware that students who are not enrolled in OCA or Parks and Rec are playing unsupervised and at their own risk.

OCC UPDATES

Q: How is it possible that $160,000 could disappear from the 2010-2011 OCC budget?

A: If we don't get new co-chairs for next year's Parent Campaign and Auction NOW, that is just what will happen!

We (the parents of Oyster-Adams) are so grateful to the Auction Committee Chairs: Hilary Ball, Liz Fallace, Sally Hunsberger, Ayesha Khan, Cherie Parker, Gina Polidoro, Becky Sachs; and the Parent Campaign Co-Chairs Liz Fallace, Mary Jo Kelly, Claudia Martin, Marcia Maziarz and Susan Stevenson for raising more than $160,000 this year for the OCC to spend on all the extras your child will enjoy next year.   (Take a look at next year's budget on the website under "OCC".)  The co-chairs of these fundraisers are moving on, and they are eager to train their replacements.  Next year's efforts will be so much more successful if they begin now.  Fall is too late!  Are you willing to help lead one of these fundraisers?  If so, you would be one of the heroes who raises 2/3 of our total budget.  Please contact Marcia Maziarz at maziarzma@gmail.com if you are interested in helping to lead the Parent Campaign next year.  Please contact Hilary Ball at hilaryball@gmail.com if you are interested in being one of the Auction Committee chairs who will run that event next year.

Annual Report Translation Update:  We promised that it would be available in both languages this week, and it's coming!  Our able translators are busy andtired at the end of the school year, just like a lot of you are.  While we have benefitted from almost instantaneous translation of all of our communications and documents throughout the year, translation takes time and skill, and the Annual Report is quite a project.  We thank you for your patience and understanding, and we will send you an alert when the Spanish version is ready and the Annual Report is up on the website.
