MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL LIANG AGUIRRE

September 25, 2009

Dear Oyster-Adams Community:

Thank you for the great turn-out at this year's Back to School Nights at both campuses.  We had hundreds of families show up for both evenings and we thoroughly enjoyed the energy and enthusiasm for this year's program.

We also understand that there are lingering questions about the new Dual Language Model-especially around how math support is given for English dominant students.  To address these and other questions, we will host an "everything you wanted to know about the Oyster-Adams dual-language model" evening in the next few weeks.  We are also planning other curriculum nights revolving around literacy and mathematics for later this fall.  Please look out for more information soon.

Enjoy the weekend!

Monica Liang Aguirre
Principal

The accounting system at both campuses is up and running.  Lunch costs are:

Your child must have a current account to continue receiving full lunches.  Please make payments in the following way:
  • Cash
  • Check (made out to DC Office of Finance and Treasury)
  • Money Order (made out to DC Office of Finance and Treasury)
  • Cashier's Check (made out to DC Office of Finance and Treasury)
  • On-line credit card option will soon be available.
Please see the Cafeteria Manager to make payments (older students can make payments on their own).

Adult Language Classes
Are you interested in becoming multilingual like your child?  We are looking into offering classes for parents in either English as a Second Language or Spanish as a Second Language.  If you might be interested, please contact Ibis Villegas at 2/671-6130 or ibis.villegas@dc.gov.

If you are interested in teaching these classes, please contact Ms. Villegas as well.

Library Forms
Thank you for signing the library agreement, so our students can check out books.  If you have not already signed one for your child please come by the library and pick one up.  Also, we are looking for donations of popular books in good condition.  We could use more mysteries, comic books, fantasy books and other high interest fiction for young readers (4th -8th).  We welcome books in English, but Spanish books are a priority.

Help the Homeless Walk
We will continue with the Oyster-Adams tradition of participating in the annual Help the Homeless Walk. This year's walk will benefit the Sasha Bruce Youthwork for homeless youth and their families. All students will walk on Thursday, October 29. Please return the "Mini-Walk Student Registration Form" as soon as possible (handed out last week at Primary and today at Intermediate). Students who return their form will receive a t-shirt. The more forms we turn in, the more money is raised for Sasha Bruce.

Used Cell Phone Drive

Denise Thomas Lucas, mother of Amanda Lucas (6th), is collecting used cell phones to raise money for the 6th grade trip to Echo Hill. Please leave your used cell phones in the main office at either Campus.

Spanish Books
The Intermediate Campus needs Spanish chapter books for use in a language support program for the Middle School. These books will be used to build classroom libraries so we can implement a "reader's workshop" model where students select their own books for language support instruction. Please drop off gently used Spanish chapter books in the main office at the Intermediate Campus.

Middle School only
Students will bring home progress reports on Friday, October 2. Students who are failing or in danger of failing a class will need to bring back a signed form to their teachers.

6th grade only
Please make sure that your child has returned his or her Echo Hill DCPS permission slip and the Echo Hill health and registration form. We need all DCPS forms no later than Monday, September 28, to ensure we have enough time to get approval for the field trip from DCPS. Also, we have only received payment for the trip from 25 families and nine families have requested full scholarships. Please contact Sandi Baer to arrange for a payment plan or request a scholarship.

8th grade only
We will start the high school application process in October. Stay tuned for more information from the school's counseling team.

Chancellor's Community Forum
DCPS invites you to the upcoming Chancellor's Community Forum focusing on the new DCPS Teaching and Learning Framework.
