MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL LIANG AGUIRRE
October 2, 2009
Dear Oyster Adams Parents and Teachers,
Fall has begun and with the cooler weather comes
the seasonal flu and the flu known as H1N1. Please note that there have been confirmed cases within our school
community.
That being said, it is of the utmost importance
to maintain proper hygiene, especially hand washing. This is also a good time
to remember to keep sick children home and to remind your children to cough or
sneeze into their sleeves, as well as not to share food, drink, and personal
items like lip balm.
Our approach is to stay informed while also
reminding everyone in the school community how to best stop the spread of germs
and viruses. Our Oyster Adams community actions provide guidance in this regard
as well. "Thinking of Others" includes not divulging specifics on who has H1N1.
If you suspect your child has the flu, notify
your primary care provider. Once confirmed, notify the school. Families might
want to consider purchasing a thermometer since an accurate reading is
important.
Also important to note is our multi-pronged
approach: Nurse Hoffman has been and will continue to provide information to
faculty and staff. Ms. Villegas, Nurse Hoffman and a small group of Oyster
Adams parents who are physicians and public health advocates have met to share
information and strategize how to best continue to inform the school community
regarding what is known thus far. Ms. Liang-Aguirre will also keep everyone
abreast of what information becomes available through DCPS.
Without a doubt, the best web site for the most
reliable and current information is the one belonging to the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention: http://cdc.gov/h1n1flu
If you are also part of the health profession or
public health community and would like to get involved at either campus, please
contact Ibis Villegas. For specific
questions about both the seasonal flu and H1N1 contact Nurse Hoffman at the
Primary Campus (671-6130) and Nurse Murphy at the Intermediate Campus
(673-7311). We look forward to working together to address the health issues
that we will be facing the school this year.
--Ibis Villegas, Assistant Principal

NEXT
WEEK (October 5-9):
Tuesday: 6:00PM
OCC Board Meeting
Upcoming events:
OCC Community Meeting: Tuesday,
October 13th 6:00PM at Primary Campus
Everything you wanted to know about
Oyster-Adams' new Dual Language Program (PK-8th): Thursday,
October 15th, 6-7:30PM. Primary Campus
Help
the Homeless Walk. This year's walk will benefit 2
organizations. The Primary School
Students will walk for Sasha Bruce Youthwork and Intermediate Campus will walk
for the Latin American Youth Center (LAYC). All students will walk on Thursday, October 29. Children will be
allowed to wear Halloween costumes for the walk. (Thursday is a half-day and
there is no school for students on Friday).
Please return the "Mini-Walk Student Registration Form" as soon as
possible (forms will be handed out today at the Intermediate Campus). Students
who return their form will receive a t-shirt. The more forms we turn in, the
more money is raised for Sasha Bruce and LAYC.
Hispanic Heritage Celebrations. Save the day for Hispanic Heritage Assemblies:
Wednesday, October 21, at the Intermediate Campus and Friday, October 23, at
the Primary Campus. Both assemblies start at 1:30 p.m.
Primary Campus Specifics
As part of the ongoing conversation on how we
can all pitch in to maintain a safe and orderly school environment, we ask that
all adults bear in mind the following school-wide procedures:
Everyone
walks once we enter the building. This includes families who are
tardy in the morning. Although there is a natural tendency to "run" when
tardy, walking in a focused manner to the class conveys readiness, purpose
and self-control. Attributes we all want to teach our children!
"Even if you're late
You slow down and wait"
-AnOyster
Adams Teacher
Everyone
stays, as the popular Cupid Shuffle
song says, "To the right-to the right" when walking up and down the
stairwells and in the hallways. No one ever breaks up a line! Common
courtesy calls for waiting for the end of a line, then proceeding to the
final destination. When adults walk in between a line, the teacher(s)
cannot see the children behind them. Please, pay extra attention to this
item.
Rainy Day dismissal at Primary. Please remember that all students will be
dismissed in the cafeteria whenever there is inclement weather right at 3:15PM.
Keeping
Students with Food Allergies Safe. We have several students in the school who have
serious food allergies. Sometimes
children with food allergies have mild symptoms, but sometimes food allergies
can be life-threatening. To protect the
children at the Primary Campus with severe food allergies, we will be offering
a peanut free, tree nut free, and sesame free lunch table in the
cafeteria.
This table will be available for all children
with peanut, tree nut, and/or sesame allergies who have documentation from
their health care provider that they have these allergies. If you haven't done
so already, please let the nurse know if your child has any food allergies.
Each child with these allergies will be able to
bring a friend to eat lunch with them.
The child and the friend must come to the health office before lunch so
that the nurse can check the friend's lunch for allergens.
We are also advising all parents who bring in
class snacks and party foods to avoid bringing peanuts, tree nuts, sesame and
foods containing these, including hummus, to school. It is unfortunately very easy for busy staff
to distribute potentially harmful foods to children with allergies if these
foods are in the classroom.
Thank you so much for your help. If you have questions, please feel free to
call Ms. Hoffman, RN, the school nurse, at 202-671-6134 or come by the health
office.
Intermediate Campus Specifics
Instruments Needed! Please consider donating any
unused wind or string instruments you might have to the Oyster-Adams Music
Department. We are in the process of organizing a beginner and advanced
after-school band program at the Intermediate Campus and would like to give all
students a chance to play if they wish. Instruments can be either loans or
donations, whichever you prefer. Contact Mr. Klapper, Intermediate Campus Music
teacher, at joseph.klapper@dc.gov
Middle
School only. Please ask your child for their mid-advisory
progress reports today. Students who are failing or in danger of failing a
class will need to bring back a signed form to their teachers.
6th
grade only. We are $6,000 short for the Echo Hill field
trip. If you have not paid for your child's trip, please send in a check as
soon as possible. You can contact Sandi
Baer to arrange for a payment plan or request a scholarship.
Shannon Emamali, mom of Amari Newman, with help
from Wendy Jacobsen, mom of Matthew Smee, and Mr. Ames, completed a grant
request to the Chesepeake Bay Trust for $2,500. Here are some additional ideas
for how we can raise the money:
1)
Cell
Phone Drive: There is a container in the office for used
cell phones. Denise Thomas Lucas, mom of Amanda Lucas, will send them in for
recycling and the proceeds will help support the field trip. Please bring your
cell phone to the main office at the Intermediate Campus.
2)
Friends
and Families: Contact family and friends for donations.
Contact Denise Thomas Lucas at dnth9@aol.com for a sample letter.
3)
Car
Wash: We can hold a car wash at the Primary Campus
but we need a few parents to volunteer to organize it. Please let Sandi Baer
know if you would be willing to help with this activity.

October 2, 2009
We
are still looking for someone to be the contact person and organize the group
for Fiesta. It's an event in the spring that is fun for students, teachers,
family, friends and the community at large. It brings everyone together for a
fantastic time of games, food and laughter.
Please, if you are looking for a way to be involved in the school, this is a
great opportunity. If I am not able to find someone, the event will not be able
to happen. I have several people who have stepped forward to help with the
overall planning so you will not do it all alone. You can send me a message at alvaradojay@gmail.com
or call me at 443-799-5458.
Upcoming
meetings. The next OCC board meeting is Oct. 6 at
Intermediate campus and our first community meeting is Oct. 13 at Primary
campus.
Collect Boxtops to earn money for Oyster-Adams! Don't forget to clip the "Boxtops for
Education" logo from your grocery products and bring them to school.
There are "Boxtops Boxes" in the front office at Oyster and in every
classroom, and in the front hall at Adams.
Every
boxtop we collect is 10 cents for our school!
