MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL LIANG-AGUIRRE

October 9, 2009

Dear Parents and Guardians:

October 4-10 is National Fire Prevention Week! Let's take this opportunity to review fire safety procedures at home.

Fire Safety Tips for Families
  • Hang this information on your refrigerator to remind you of fire-safety all year long.
  • Have a home fire-escape plan that includes two ways out of each room.
  • Choose an outside meeting place so that everyone knows where to go in case of fire.
  • Have smoke alarms in every level of your home, inside each bedroom, and outside each sleeping area.
  • Test your smoke alarms at least once monthly.
  • Have a family fire drill twice a year.
  • Have your chimney and furnace inspected every year.
  • Keep curtains and other things that can burn at least 3 feet away from stovetops, fireplaces and space heaters.
  • Grown-ups should stay in the kitchen when cooking on the stovetop.
  • Keep matches and lighters up high and in a locked cabinet.
  • Keep kids away from hot stovetops, irons, curling irons and other things that could burn them.

Monica Liang-Aguirre
Principal

ANNOUNCEMENTS &
REMINDERS

October 9, 2009

NEXT WEEK (October 12-16):

Monday:  NO SCHOOL!  Columbus Day.

Tuesday:  6:00PM  OCC Community Meeting and "Everything you Wanted to know about the Dual Language Model"  6PM-8PM  Oyster campus

Upcoming events:  October 18:  ¡Vamos! 5K.  Register now at: http://www.vamos5k.com/

Enrollment Audit at both Campuses is Monday, October 19!
Every year, the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) verifies the number of students we have enrolled and compares it to the number of students we actually have in the classrooms.  This affects our funding.  Unless your child is sick, please ensure that your child attends school on October 19 and is here ON TIME.  Thank you for your assistance!

Reminders to Help Keep Our Students Healthy.  If your child has a fever, vomiting, or diarrhea he/she must stay home for at least 24 hours after all the symptoms are gone.  (This means when the fever is gone for 24 hours without any medication such as Tylenol.) Please remind your child not to share food, drinks, or personal items like lip balm.

School Pictures!  Look out for more information soon: October 20 (Primary Campus) and October 21 (Intermediate Campus).

Family Zumba at Oyster-Adams gets National Attention.  The unique Family Zumba sessions taking place at the Primary Campus have drawn the attention of Lakeshore Learning Materials through word-of-mouth. Ms. Villegas was pleasantly surprised to receive a call from the Lakeshore corporate office in California, asking if Oyster-Adams Zumba students could provide NAEYC (The National Association for the Education of Young Children) members with a Zumba demo at their national conference held at the D.C.Convention Center in November. Lakeshore sponsors the Celebration Stage at the NAEYC conference each year with a goal to "showcase the really great programs for young children in the area the conference is being held".

Spanish Classes for Adults to Begin at the Primary Campus.  Oyster-Adams parent Mr. Vilchez has agreed to teach Spanish As A Second Language (SSL) to interested parents. Please contact Mr. Vilchez directly at 202-285-6554 or at molinero40@hotmail.com. Classes will most likely be scheduled during school hours since Mr. Vilchez spends the evenings with his family. Mr. Vilchez has taught SSL in North Carolina. He is currently teaching SSL at GW University.

Pace Car Competition Results.  Thanks to all Oyster-Adams students and parents who participated in last Wednesday's "International Walk to School Day" - it was a huge success and every one of us who walks, scooters, bikes or takes mass transit helps to reduce pollution and traffic at and around the school grounds.  Thanks to all who participated and the Safe Routes to School volunteers who made this event happen!

Last May Oyster-Adams took part in the 2009 DC Neighborhood Pace Car competition - Congratulations on taking 2nd Place!

The competition included taking a pledge to keep our students safe.  "Safe Cars Means Safe Children: Pace Car" is a program sponsored by the Washington Area Bicyclist Association to encourage drivers to adhere to the posted speed limits and treat pedestrians and bicyclists with respect by sharing the road safely. Oyster-Adams competed against other schools to see which one could get the highest percentage of parents to sign and return the Pace Car "Driver Pledge."  Thanks again for slowing traffic around our school!

Those who would like to take part in the Safe Routes to School committee and make our streets safer for pedestrians can contact Jeff Tackes at oysterwalkbike@gmail.com

Primary Campus Specifics

Walk for the Homeless at the Primary Campus.  The annual Walk for the Homeless will take place on Thursday, October 29th. Students in grades 1-3 at the Primary Campus will first hear about the importance of walking for the homeless directly from our beneficiary, Sasha Bruce. This will take place in the cafeteria at 9:00 am. All students will walk around the block at 9:30AM. Students may come to school that day wearing either their Walk for the Homeless T-shirts (available only to those who returned signed permission slips by Oct. 7th ) or a costume.  Last year's event was memorable. We will therefore walk exactly the same route as last year. Please contact the Main Office and leave your name and contact information, if you can help supervise students as they walk. We will need parents stationed along the way. The exact route will be delineated in the next newsletter. Volunteers are needed! Please help us make this year's walk as successful as the last one!

Girl Scouts will resume soon at the Primary Campus!   The first troop meeting will be at 4:30 p.m., Monday, Oct. 19. This meeting is geared toward third graders, though others are welcome. If there is enough interest from younger girls, additional troops will be started for PK-K and 1st-2nd graders. The Girl Scouts also will start troops at the Intermediate Campus if girls and their parents express an interest.

The third-grade girls will meet Mondays from 4:30-5:45. For the first six weeks, they will meet every Monday; after that, the meetings will be on alternate Mondays. The Girl Scouts will provide college students to lead the troop, at least initially, but parents (including dads) are encouraged to participate and will be needed for off-site activities.

Parents must fill out registration forms before the first meeting. The forms are available from classroom teachers, OCA or OST counselors. There is no charge to participate. Please return the forms to Lauren Velazquez in the OCA/OST office, just inside the front door. For more information, contact Jodi Enda at jodi.enda@comcast.net.

Intermediate Campus Specifics

Walk for the Homeless at the Intermediate Campus.  The annual Walk for the Homeless will take place on Thursday, October 29th. All students at the Intermediate Campus will engage in projects to raise their awareness about the issue of homelessness and even do activities to help the homeless with representatives from the Latin American Youth Center, our beneficiary. All students will walk around the block at 10 AM. Students may come to school that day wearing either their Walk for the Homeless T-shirts (available only to those who returned signed permission slips by Oct. 15th ) or a costume. Please contact the Intermediate Campus Main Office and leave your name and contact information if you can help supervise students as they walk. We will need parents stationed along the way. The exact route will be delineated in the next newsletter. Please help us make this year's walk as successful as the last one!

NEWS FROM THE LSRT

October 9, 2009

What on earth is the LSRT???

Here's a quick background:  The LSRT (Local School Restructuring Team) was created by DCPS in the 1990s to increase collaboration and involvement among teachers, parents and administrators in all DCPS schools.  Its purpose is to advise the Principal on school-related strategic and academic matters.

The Oyster-Adams LSRT has 18 members who are elected to two-year terms, including teachers, parents, support staff, a community representative and the administration.  Parents represent both campuses and are both Spanish and English dominant. LSRT meets monthly, usually on the last Wednesday of the month, alternating between the campuses.  LSRT minutes are posted the O-A website ten days after each meeting and placed in binders in each school office for community access.  Oyster Adams LSRT members for SY 2009 - 2010 are:

Jackie Alvarado -- OCC Chair
Sandi Baer -- Administration
Ann Marie Bairstow -- Parent
Tatum Byfield -- Parent
Maureen Diner -- Parent
Ed Dixon -- Teacher/Co-WTU Rep
Sandra Gonzalez -- Parent
Julia Hainer-Violand -- Teacher/LSRT Co-Chair
Prince Hunter -- Teacher
Ofir Hurtado -- Teacher
Laura Kleinmann -- Teacher
Monica Liang-Aguirre -- Principal
Claudia Martin -- Parent
Elba Morales -- Community Rep
Leticia Naranjo -- Parent
Rick Quinones -- Teacher/WTU Rep
Susan Stevenson -- Parent/LSRT Co-Chair
Support Staff -- TBD

The LSRT held its first meeting of the school year on September 30.  During the past school year, the LSRT helped create a strategic plan for Oyster-Adams.  This year, the LSRT will help determine how to operationalize that plan, with sub-committees focusing on its three main objectives:

1)      Reduce the achievement gap
2)      Improve school climate and align school culture more fully with Oyster-Adams' community actions
3)      Increase parent involvement and make it more inclusive

The LSRT welcomes your input!  Feel free to attend one of our meetings (calendar posted in the weekly bulletin).  If you have any issues you would like the LSRT to consider, please either talk with an LSRT member or leave us a note in the LSRT box at either campus.  You may also present your issue in person at an LSRT meeting.  Please contact one of the Co-chairs at least a week before the meeting to be added to the agenda.  The LSRT also will seek community input throughout the year as issues arise.  We look forward to working with you!
