MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL LIANG AGUIRRE

October 16, 2009

Dear Parents and Guardians:

Hopefully the weather will dry up for Sunday and the second annual ¡Vamos! 5K can be another crisp yet sunny experience.  I hope you will join me, my family, many staff members, parents, students and community members as we run, skip, walk and hobble up and around the beautiful Woodley Park neighborhood.  Don't forget to register online!

If you are unable to participate, please consider volunteering your time on Sunday morning to guide the runners and shot encouraging words.  Contact Serena Wiltshire, 202-249-8327, wiltshire@starpower.net or Tamara Belt (202)-415-8020, tamaracbelt@yahoo.com to volunteer.

I also wanted to share with you some very encouraging and exciting news that was just released this week about DCPS' performance on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). NAEP is a national, gold-standard assessment for 4th, 8th and 12th graders, administered from the outside, and it is not aligned to the DC CAS test we prepare for in schools.  Schools all over the country are picked randomly to participate (last year, Oyster-Adams 8th graders participated).  Michelle Rhee shared the following results yesterday with DCPS staff:

  • DCPS had the greatest gains of any state in 4th grade math (DCPS increased by 5 points while the nation remained flat.).
  • In 4th grade, DCPS was the only district in the country to see gains in every subgroup. African-American students, students on free and reduced lunch, English Language Learners, students with IEPs.... Compared to the nation, they knocked it out of the park.
  • DC is one of only five states to show increases in math for both grades (4th and 8th): District of Columbia, Nevada, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont.
  • 8th grade growth in DCPS was 3 times the national average.

Remember to appreciate your child's teachers--they are working incredibly hard every day, weathering massive changes in the district and at Oyster-Adams.  Change is hard, but if move forward with conviction and give things time, we will begin to see results.

Have a great weekend!

-- Monica Liang Aguirre, Principal

If you would like to purchase a portrait of your child, you must complete the School Picture Order Form which was sent home today in your child's backpack and return it, along with payment, to their homeroom teacher no later than Picture Day (October 20th and 21st).  Extra order forms can be found in the front office of each campus.

Mr. Vilchez has taught SSL in North Carolina. He is currently teaching SSL at GW University.

Primary Campus Specifics

Walk for the Homeless at the Primary Campus.  The annual Walk for the Homeless will take place on Thursday, October 29th. Students in grades 1-3 at the Primary Campus will first hear about the importance of walking for the homeless directly from our beneficiary, Sasha Bruce. This will take place in the cafeteria at 9:00 am. All students will walk around the block at 9:30AM. Students may come to school that day wearing either their Walk for the Homeless T-shirts (available only to those who returned signed permission slips by Oct. 7th ) or a costume.  Last year's event was memorable. We will therefore walk exactly the same route as last year. Please contact the Main Office and leave your name and contact information, if you can help supervise students as they walk. We will need parents stationed along the way. The exact route will be delineated in the next newsletter. Volunteers are needed! Please help us make this year's walk as successful as the last one!

Girl Scouts will resume soon at the Primary Campus!  The first troop meeting will be at 4:30 p.m., Monday, Oct. 19. This meeting is geared toward third graders, though others are welcome. If there is enough interest from younger girls, additional troops will be started for PK-K and 1st-2nd graders. The Girl Scouts also will start troops at the Intermediate Campus if girls and their parents express an interest.

Parents must fill out registration forms before the first meeting. The forms are available from classroom teachers, OCA or OST counselors. There is no charge to participate. Please return the forms to Lauren Velazquez in the OCA/OST office, just inside the front door. For more information, contact Jodi Enda at jodi.enda@comcast.net.

Thanks to those who came to the OCC community meeting on Tuesday night. We had an intimate crowd. I hope to have a larger crowd at our next community meeting. • Book Fair (December 7-14)
