MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL LIANG AGUIRRE
|
October 23, 2009
Dear Parent and Guardians:
Flu season is upon us with a vengeance!
The flu is hitting Oyster-Adams hard! Numerous teachers have been sick and have had
lengthy absences due to the lingering nature of the flu. We also have several students sick every
day. Thank you for your vigilance in
keeping your sick children at home and your responsiveness when you are called
to pick up a sick child. As a reminder, please make arrangements in advance to
have a back-up plan in case you are unable to pick up a sick child from school.
Important information regarding free vaccination
clinics was sent home on Thursday both in paper and via email. Please review your child's backpacks and your
in-box.
Oyster-Adams to become member of the
International Spanish Academy
Next week, I will be traveling to Houston, TX to
attend a three-day seminar with the International Spanish Academy (ISA). The ISA is sponsored by
the Education Office of the Embassy of Spain and is a collaboration of 88 North
American schools (elementary, middle and high schools) that have programs
in which part of the content is taught in Spanish (dual, bilingual, immersion,
etc). Oyster-Adams
applied and was accepted to be a member of the ISA last spring. We will officially become an ISA school as of
next week.
The aim of the ISAs is to develop a quality Spanish-English bilingual education
program which will promote high academic standards for all students, as well as
provide them with the values of multicultural education, and sets as its goal
to foster international relations and the understanding between cultures,
preparing students to achieve oral and written competence in both languages for
both academic purposes and interpersonal communication.
I look forward to learning from and sharing with
other dual-language schools across the US and Canada and look forward to
communicating our new findings with you in the near future.
Have a wonderful weekend,
Monica
Liang-Aguirre, Principal

tradition, please come to a meeting on Monday, October 26 at 6:00pm in the
Oyster library. Dinner will be provided. If you would like to help
but can't make it to the meeting, please contact Serena Wiltshire at

expressed interest in joining a team. Please return them as soon as possible as
practice starts in early November. There are additional copies in the main

Agua=Paz is ready to start its
second year. Monday, Nov. 2 and every Monday until mid-May. Agua=Paz is an
opportunity for students in 4th-8th grade to "Think Globally" by
raising awareness and money to bring clean drinking water to places in Latin
America where it is unavailable. Last year, students funded water sources for
two schools in Nicaragua. More information will be sent home with interested

Art Help
Needed! Sra. Tavarez, the Art Teacher (4th-8th Grade)
at Adams is seeking volunteer parents to assist in the art classroom. Times are
flexible but any help is greatly appreciated (filing student projects, cleaning
art supplies, setting up for classes, etc.). Please contact her at 202 276 5914
cell or yanitza.tavarez@dc.gov.
Thanks!
In addition, a wish list is being compiled for the art classroom: Disinfecting
Wipes, Kleenex, Hand Sanitizer, Paper Towels. If possible, please donate any of
these items by sending them to school with your child.
Reminder: The Intermediate Campus playground
is closed on the weekends. Anyone who climbs over or crawls under the fence to

October 23, 2009
Hello Oyster-Adams community:
Thanks to everyone who came out to support the Vamos! 5K. I
ran it and it was not easy. Not only did I struggle up the hills but also my 9
year-old beat me to the finish line! I'll get him next year!
Maria Elena Nawar
did a wonderful job putting this event together. Her group worked tirelessly to
make the event a success.
Don't forget that this Friday evening (10/23) is the Hispanic
Heritage Celebration! Claudia Cauterucci has been working hard to make it a fun
family event. We hope that you will come out and have a fun evening at the
primary campus (Oyster). Food will be provided but if you would like to bring a
food item, dessert or drink from a particular country, feel free to bring it
with you.
Looking ahead, other upcoming events that are needing not
only volunteers but also participation:
- Book Fair (2nd
week of December) - contact Laura Kleinmann (kleinmannlaura@hotmail.com)
-
Christmas Tree Sale (December 5-6
and 12-13) - contact Karen Smith (ksmith@urban.org)
