MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL LIANG-AGUIRRE
|
November 6, 2009
Dear Parents and Guardians:
For me, the start of November always marks the
end of the "beginning of the school year" and the transition into "the middle
of the school year." It is also the time
when the staff and faculty (and surely students and parents) begin to get
really tired. Yes, indeed, we are in the
throes of the 2009-2010 school year. As
we enter into the frenzy of the holiday season, we have to remain focused on
our main purpose: to nurture bilingualism and bi-literacy in our students as
they grow academically.
Since many of our families have international
roots, the holiday season is a time when many decide to travel long distances.
While I encourage travel to broaden our global perspectives and I value the
importance of family ties, missing school has its negative impact and we must
be judicious about our plan. Keep in
mind that student and especially teachers much put in significant extra work to
get a child caught up after a prolonged absence
If you are planning a long trip that will
require your child to miss school, please consider the following:
-
Has your child missed much school this
year already (due to the flu?)
-
What does your child's teacher think the
impact will be of an extended absence?
Then:
-
Devise a plan to keep your child reading
everyday and do other recommended work.
-
Write a note to the front office noting
the dates of your child's absence.
-
Please note that according to DCPS
policies, family travel (i.e. vacation) is an unexcused absence.
Next week you will receive your child's first
Advisory Report Card. Many parents and
teachers feel the strain of not having our first Parent/Teacher Conferences
until December this year. Please
remember that if you have any questions that you should feel free to contact
the teachers directly.
Enjoy the weekend,
Monica Liang Aguirre

IMPACT AID FORMS: Past Due! We are still missing
many IMPACT AID Form that were due this past Wednesday. Please make sure to
turn the form in on Monday. Each year,
DCPS applies for Impact Aid funds from the US Department of Education for additional
assistance. In order to qualify for
funding, 100% of surveys must be returned.
All information on the survey is confidential.
Congratulations to Melissa Mohammed, Technology
Coordinator, and Oscar Ramirez, Dual Language Coordinator who have made it through the first level (and
have won $1000) of a competitive grant called "State Farm Es Para Mí." Their grant proposal contained a video which
highlights our new Advisory Program for middle school students, part of a
district-wide drop-out prevention initiative.
Stay-tuned for more information on how to vote for their video and help
them win the grand prize.
Dog
Party! Author Elise Luskin and photographer Diana Walker will visit
the Primary Campus on Tuesday morning at 9:00AM and 11:00AM at the Intermediate
Campus, accompanied by "Fred" and "Shakespeare". Both dogs are featured in the
book, To The Rescue and both dogs have been part of DC's Humane Education
program for the past eight years. Students in ECC and PKB as well as last
year's 3rd graders have been working with this program. Parents are
invited to attend.
OCA Fundraiser/Cocktail
Party: TICKETS ON SALE NOW!
Oyster-Adams
parents and friends are invited to a cocktail party from 6-8 p.m., Friday, Nov.
13, at Stanford in Washington, 2661 Connecticut Ave., NW. Meet other
community members, socialize over food and drinks and earn a chance to win
great items during a raffle and auction. Childcare will be provided, free of
charge, at the primary campus. Proceeds will fund scholarships to OCA, Oyster
Creative Activities. OCA serves 150 students, nearly a quarter of our student
body, and about 25 percent of those students receive needs-based scholarships.
Come support our students and have fun at the same time.
Student
Council. November marks the time when Student Council elections are
held. Students who are interested in participating in Student Council and in
Student Council leadership positions must contact Ms. Nora Bustios and/or Mr.
Geovanni Peña at the Primary Campus. Pablo Giron is the contact person at the
Intermediate Campus. Details are forthcoming.
RIF
is coming to Oyster Adams! Next week we will have the first of three book distributions
at Oyster Adams sponsored by Reading Is
Fundamental. On Monday, each student at the Primary Campus will have the
opportunity to choose a book to read, enjoy and keep! At the Intermediate
Campus, each student will be given the opportunity to pick up a book from the
librarian. Thank you to Kinder A
teacher Carolina Clarens for coordinating this wonderful opportunity!
DON'T BUY BOOKS
. . . yet.
Control your book-buying impulses until December 7th and then
buy all the books you could possibly want at the Oyster Adams Bilingual Book
Fair. Once again, librarian Laura
Kleinmann has put together an amazing selection of Spanish language books
(authentic and translations) that is unmatched in the Washington DC area (maybe
on the east coast!). In addition, you
will find a wonderful selection of books in English for all ages. Don't miss out on the opportunity to
participate in this wonderful Oyster-Adams tradition.
The book fair runs from Monday, December 7 (parent-teacher conference day) through Sunday,
December 13th.
EARLY
STAGES: Early Stages
is the program within the District of Columbia Public Schools' Office of
Special Education focused on children 3 to 5 years old. This program seeks to
provide early identification of any developmental delays that a child may have
and provides appropriate evaluations and services to address those delays.
These services are available to all families living in the District, whether
your child goes to public school, private school, is home-schooled or has not
yet entered the school system. Catching developmental delays as soon as
possible is the best way to assure that every DC child has a stronger start to
his or her education.
To this end, Early Stages begins this identification process by administering
the Ages & Stages Questionnaire (ASQ) to your child, either at your school
or at the Early Stages Center. This highly rated screening tool offers a
complete overview of your child's development, including the areas of gross and
fine motor, communication, problem solving, and social/emotional development.
During the screening, your child will be able to play, draw, move about
and practice daily living skills. The process takes only about 15 minutes to
complete.
If your child between ages 3-5 might benefit from the ASQ screening or if you
know of another parent with a child, please contact: Early Stages at
202-698-8037 or visit the Early Stages website at http://www.earlystagesdc.org.

for the NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children) which
begins November 18th. They will visit Pre-K and Kinder classes at the Primary

visit is a reminder that we have a lot to be proud of at Oyster Adams
Bilingual. We literally host visitors from around the country and from around
the world, who come to see our dual language approach in action.

Hello
Oyster-Adams Community!
How
fun was the Hispanic Heritage Celebration? Claudia and her wonderful group of
volunteers, not only did a great job with putting the event together, but also
in bringing the community together! I've posted some pictures that I took at
the event on Shutterfly. If you would like to see them or add your pictures, go
to www.oysteradamsbilingualschool.shutterfly.com.
If you see a picture that you want me to send to you, let me know. If you see a
picture you want me to remove, also let me know.
A
word from Claudia:
THANKS
TO YOU......
THE
HISPANIC HERITAGE CELEBRATION WAS A SUCCESS!
To
those of you who attended and helped, THANK YOU! Without your energy, dedication, and
volunteerism, this event would not have been the same. This event clearly demonstrated how much we
can do with the community spirit that
our Oyster-Adams embodies. Until
next year!
