A Message from Assistant Principal Ibis Villegas

A Community Action Moment at Primary

Something beautiful happened during last Friday's bake sale after school. A little girl was quietly standing near the bake sale crying because she didn't have any money. I walked over to see why she was crying and saw a third grader  standing in front of her, his arm extended, with a dollar bill in his hand.

I asked the little girl, "Why are you crying?"  She said, "Because I don't have any money."  I said to the boy, "Its ok" (you don't have to give her your own dollar). He kept his arm extended and replied, "I want to help".

His demeanor impressed me as so sincere and full of good will. This was a living example of our Community Actions...in action!  The respective parents came quickly upon the scene and the situation was happily resolved. It was great to witness this "Community Action Moment" at Oyster-Adams.

IMPACT AID FORMS:  Past Due!  We are still missing many IMPACT AID Form that were due this past Wednesday. Please make sure to turn the form in on Monday.  Each year, DCPS applies for Impact Aid funds from the US Department of Education for additional assistance.  In order to qualify for funding, 100% of surveys must be returned.  All information on the survey is confidential.

What is a "wish list" and why should I care?  Each year, Oyster-Adams teachers at all grade levels fill out "wish lists" of the books available for purchase at the Bilingual Book Fair that they would like to have in their classrooms.  You can help stock your child's classroom with wonderful new books in both Spanish and English by buying books from these wish lists.  The wish lists will be posted at the book fair which runs from Monday, December 7 through Sunday, December 13 at the primary campus.  Don't miss a great opportunity to put books directly into the hands of your child and his/her friends!

Attention Dog Lovers! Animal Rescue League Event.  The Washington Animal Rescue League is holding a Bark for Books event on Sunday, November 22nd from 1:30pm to 3:00pm. Contact Humane Educator Debbie Duel at (202) 726-2556, ext 247 or go to www.warl.org for more information. The Rescue League is located at 71 Oglethorpe Street, N.W. Washington, DC  20011

Primary Campus Specifics

Student Council begins at the Primary Campus.  Congratulations are extended to each Student Council representative in grades 1-3. Elected students must excel academically, be responsible, show leadership qualities, be a global thinker and a model school citizen. There are two Student Council reps per classroom. Meetings will be held on Fridays from 12:15-12:45. Each year, Student Council representatives volunteer to campaign for President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary. The student body in grades 1-3 will listen to campaign speeches on Monday, November 16 at 8:40am. Elections will take place on Tuesday, November 17th.

Upcoming Assembly.  "One Man Show" assembly program for Second and Third Grade students on Monday, November 16th  at 1:30pm.

Intermediate Campus Specifics

Parking at the Intermediate Campus:  As we all know, parking is very limited near the Intermediate Campus.  Unfortunately, we do not have extra spaces in the parking lot for parents or visitors.

We need parent cooperation! Please do not park in any spaces before 4:30PM.  Every day we are inconveniencing staff members who cannot park or cannot leave because there is an unidentified car blocking their way. If you cannot find parking and are at the school on brief business, please inform the office.

Morning Drop Off.  A reminder to please drop off all students in the front of the building in the mornings.  The only students who should be entering the building through the back are students who ride their bicycles to school.  Again, the added traffic of student drop offs is causing alley back-ups in the morning.  Thank you!

Recycling program to begin FINALLY at Adams!  The Adams Campus of Oyster-Adams is anxious to get started with our recycling program to reduce the impact we're having on the environment. We have 30 bins that we will place in every classroom. We have teachers and parents who have committed to support this effort. We are about to launch this year's student council and would like to make this the first order of business for them. Please feel free to contact us if you have any experience and/or contacts with environmental organizations that can support our efforts to increase students' awareness about recycling.

Agua = Paz Club starts!  Oyster-Adams will begin its Agua = Paz Club again this year with an orientation on November 17th at 3:30.  We have space for 25 children from the Intermediate Campus, which will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. Click here for enrollment forms which may be turned into the main office.

For more information, please contact Kathy Fletcher kathy@useless.org  or Liz Fallace at lfmh@aol.com or 202-667-1555

Student council.  Sr Girón is working to organize next week's elections for the Oyster-Adams student's council. He will be talking to each class about open positions and asking students to organize the elections. We will let you know the results. Our goal with the student council is to give students a voice in our everyday life in the Oyster-Adams campus.

NEWS FROM THE OCC

November 13, 2009

Hello Oyster-Adams Community:

About the Directory:  You should have received a copy of the 2009-2010 Family Directory this week. We distributed one per family through the youngest sibling. If you did not receive your directory, please check with your child's afternoon teacher for the elementary grades or your child's homeroom teacher in middle school.
For those children from divided families, we made every effort to give those students two copies. If you did not receive a second copy, please leave a note in the school office with your child's name and class.  Many many thanks to parents Phoebe Schlanger and Christina Garza for their leadership and efforts on the production of the Directory.

Volunteers Needed for By-laws:   We are looking for volunteers to help clean up the OCC's by-laws. The project was begun last year but needs a core group of committed individuals willing to finish this project. Please contact Jackie Alvarado if you are interested.

Please remember to be in touch with me, or PTO Manager (ptomanager.com), to volunteer your time for one of the upcoming events:
  • Next OCC committee meeting  is Nov. 17 at the Primary campus. Draft agenda will be posted on website by  Monday evening.
  • Book Fair (December 7-14)  - contact Laura Kleinmann (kleinmannlaura@hotmail.com)
  • Christmas Tree Sale  (December 5-6 and 12-13) - contact Karen Smith (ksmith@urban.org)

If you need to contact me: email -- alvaradojay@gmail.com, cell phone: 443-799-5458
