A Message from Principal Liang-Aguirre
|

Dear Oyster-Adams Community:
For
me, Thanksgiving is the most enjoyable holiday of the year for the following
reasons: the main attraction is food
instead of gifts, it focuses on being grateful for your loved ones and friends,
and it provides respite precisely when all of us in the schools become exceedingly
tired. Having only ever functioned in the academic calendar for my entire life,
making it to Thanksgiving holds a certain sense of accomplishment. (I also have
an extra special place in heart for the holiday since my oldest child was also
born on Thanksgiving day nine years ago.)
This
year, as we come to a natural reflection place in the school year, we are
working together as a staff to review what's working and what needs further
consideration. We will be making some
adjustments to the current schedule to accommodate for the differentiated needs
of our youngest children and will be communicating that to you shortly.
Ms.
Villegas and I have also been furiously working to complete the first Cycle of
the new DCPS teacher and staff evaluation model called IMPACT. The process is thorough and rigorous yet
incredibly time consuming. As all of us
are adjusting to the new heightened sense of accountability and rigor, and while
we truly believe that the new system is challenging yet fair, it has also
significantly increased the level of stress in our faculty. Ms. Villegas and I both want to thank our
wonderful staff for their commitment to the students and ability to live
graciously under trying times.
Finally,
we just received notice that DCPS is supporting our growing administrative
needs and will be able to hire a second full-time Assistant Principal at the
Intermediate Campus for this year as well as keep the current Coordinator
position. We have already launched the
search for outstanding candidates and hope to fill the position as soon as
possible. I would like to thank Sr.
Girón for his willingness to step up and help us during the transition. Once we
hire a new AP, we will have Sr. Girón return to teaching 5th grade
full time.
We
will not be sending out another Friday Folder until after Thanksgiving. This
year, I vow to slow down and enjoy the holiday with my loved ones. I will turn
off the blackberry, enjoy my family and friends' company, and worry less about
roasting the perfect turkey and transforming the house into something it's
not. I hope you will do the same!
All
the best,
Monica
Liang Aguirre

Halloween at the White House We've
had a few parents ask us to explain the process that was used to select the
participants for the Halloween party at the White House. I apologize that this was not done in a more
public and transparent manner. We were
given 48 working hours before having to submit the names of all of the
participants and because it coincided with my trip out of town, I had our
office staff focus on contacting parents.
We asked DCPS to conduct a random sort of our students and then we
proceeded to call of the parents in order of the list. Because security
clearance was required of all participants, families had to provide us with
detailed and personal information. If a
family was not able or not interested in participating, we simply went to the
next child. I certainly hope that we
will be the recipients of more of these wonderful opportunities! Click here for a list of all
of the lucky kids who were able to attend the event at the White House with
their families.
(If
there are any families that have pictures, please email them to me for use on
the DCPS website.)
Primary Campus Specifics
A
Community Action Moment at Primary. Student Council Representatives Deliver Speeches at
the Primary Campus.
Congratulations are extended
to all Student Council representatives for delivering effective bilingual
campaign speeches on November 16th. Delivering and listening to
campaign speeches are valuable civic experiences for both candidates and the student body. The
representatives and their elected officials will soon begin to meet with Ms.
Nora Bustios and Mr. Geovanni Peña to work on behalf of all students in
the Primary Campus.
Oyster Adams Family Zumba Goes National. Congratulations
are extended to all the families, especially the children, who participate in
Family Zumba with Ms. Villegas on
Friday evenings. Zumba students will
dance at the Celebration Stage located in the Convention Center at 11:00am on
Saturday, November 21st. The event is part of a national conference
hosted by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).
Our students were selected in keeping with one of the components of NAEYC's
mission to, "showcase the
really great programs for young children in the area the conference is being
held".

For those children from divided families, we made every effort to give those
students two copies. If you did not receive a second copy, please leave a note
in the school office with your child's name and class.
