A Message from Principal Liang-Aguirre
|
December 4, 2009
Dear Oyster-Adams Community:
I hope every had a relaxing
Thanksgiving and is now energized for the final push into the new year!
I want to congratulate the 36
Oyster-Adams 6-8th graders who participated in DC-SCORES. DC-SCORES is a city-wide program that combines
soccer, creative writing, and service-learning for 700 students at 23 DC public
and public charter elementary and middle schools in Washington, DC. This is the first year that Oyster-Adams has
participated.
This week, Oyster-Adams brought home the Golden Mic trophy
in DC SCORES' 12th Annual Poetry Slam!
Our students were clearly ready to take the stage, as the students
performed two poems about soccer in English ("Soccer" and "Soccer in the Rain")
and had the audience swaying to a pair of songs in Spanish ("Rosas" and "Amor
Perdido").
Decked out in their DC SCORES uniforms, the team came
together on stage for a winning performance that had the crowd on its
feet.
Not only did our student shine in poetry, but last week, our boys' team played in the Champioship game
against the long-standing team at Deal
Middle School. Although they did not win the game, the team
made us all so proud with the determiniation, hard work and ability to take
second place with grace and style.
Thank you to our teachers
Eugenia Reyes, Jason Hoeksema
and Oscar de la Puente, for their commitment to
this program and for lauching Oyster-Adams' participation in it with such great
success.
This program was paid for by
our OCC that is so generouly suported by you, the parents. I would like to thank the OCC for supporting
programs that ensure that all students have access to enrichment opportunities
that truly shape their lives. This is just one example of how the OCC provides
critical resources to our school programming.
Your contributions to the Annual Fund make a big difference.
Thank you for your conitnued
support.
--Monica Liang Aguirre

for less than $10.
Media Release Forms: In
the next few weeks, a DPCS photographer will be taking pictures at our both

are attaching a media release form that must be filled out by all

The search for an Intermediate Campus
Assistant Principal: We have launched our search and will be
starting interviews next week. The LSRT
has developed the following process:
- Principal receives and reviews resumes
and ensures candidates are qualified.
- Oyster-Adams Hiring Committee
(consisting of elected teachers and staff) will conduct interviews.
- Final candidates will have the
opportunity to meet Oyster-Adams staff members in an informal setting for
a mutual get-to-know you.
- Reference check is conducted before any
offers are made.
It's Open House Season already! We
are hosting several Open Houses in the next few months for prospective parents
interested in sending their children for the 2009-2010 school year. In an
effort to recruit more native Spanish speakers, we are holding a Spanish
language Open House on Thursday morning at 9:30AM. If you know of any Spanish speaking families
with children ready for PK or Kinder next year, please encourage them to
attend. If you are interested in
assisting in the Open Houses, please contact the principal at monica.liang-aguirre@dc.gov.
Oyster Adams Bilingual receives accolades
from a Washington International School
Visitor who contacted Ms. Villegas
recently to see if she could tour our school. Ms. Visconti, a Director from the Washington International
School (WIS), came on Tuesday, December
2nd and spent most of the school day visiting both campuses. She and Ms.
Villegas met at the end of the day to speak informally about both schools. Ms.
Visconti was impressed with the striking similarity between both schools and
when asked why she was interested in visiting us, she indicated that Oyster
Adams was on her "short list" of DC schools due to our excellent reputation
and due to the fact that they would like to consider as applicants Oyster-Adams
eighth graders who express an interest in WIS. This visit was one of many reminders that our
reputation truly does precede us. Later on this month we will receive visitors
from a school in Raleigh, NC.
Administrators at the Casa Esperanza Montessori Dual-Language Charter
School contacted Ms. Villegas and will meet with her and with Mr. Ramirez to
learn more about our approach to Dual-Language instruction.
Primary Campus Specifics
Logistics at the Primary Campus during the
Book Fair. Please be aware that all
next week, children who eat breakfast must do so in the Art Room.
It is therefore extremely important for all children who eat breakfast to be in
school by 8:15 am. This will allow them time to eat and also allow us to
prepare the room in time for the first class of the school day. Everyone's
cooperation is needed to start the day on a productive note. All students will
eat their lunch in the classrooms during the Fair. Furthermore, since each of
our Intermediate Campus classes will be visiting the Book Fair on different
days next week, it will be important for Intermediate Campus families who
decide to pick up their children at the Primary Campus, to go directly into the
Book Fair for pick up.
After-School Spanish Drama Presentation. Primary Campus students who are enrolled in Ms. Karen Morales' class will
present, "El bosque hay que cuidarlo" at 6:00pm on Thursday, December 10th.
Students have been working hard for this event. All parents are invited to
attend. Come learn what this back-by-popular-demand Spanish Drama class does by
joining the audience!
Intermediate Campus Specifics
NEW Routines for
After School At the Intermediate Campus. We are fortunate to have a variety of programs, sports and
clubs offered daily after school. As a
result, we have more students staying after school than ever. In order to assure that we can account for
all students during all after-school hours, we will need to implement some more
stringent policies.
Effective immediately, all students who are not
participating in an after-school program, must leave the building and premises
by 3:30PM. Unfortunately, this includes
the field. We cannot take responsibility
for students playing outside unless they are being supervised by an
after-school program staff member. We
have had several incidents this year where students have been hurt and there is
no one responsible for them.
Students who are not picked up by 3:30PM will wait for their
ride in the front office.
Students who participate in sports leagues that begin later
in the afternoon must either participate in an after-school program or leave at
3:15PM and return for the practice. Both
afterschool programs, OST and OCA have space available and can make
arrangements for drop-in schedules.
Scholarships are available.
Please contact Lauren Velazquez at lauren.velazquez@dc.gov for OST or
Connie Oliver at connieoca2003@yahoo.comfor more information about OCA.
We thank you in
advance for your cooperation and apologize for any inconvenience. Please understand that this is to ensure the
safety of all of our students at all times.
Parking. Unfortunately,
we continue to have daily problems with parking due to parents continuing to
use the staff parking lot. The
parking lot is only for STAFF. Please be
considerate and do not park in the lot between the hours of 8AM-4:30PM. After
4:30PM, if there is a space available that does not black anyone in, you may
park there.
If you
cannot find parking during the day and are at the school on brief business,
please inform the office.
Pick Up and Drop off After
School. Please
remember that no students should be dropped off or picked up from the back
entrance/parking lot area.

Upcoming games:
-
Boys middle school basketball vs Langdon Wednesday Dec 9.
at 3:30. Location to be determined. No girls game.
Please note that game schedules are subject to
change. Contact the team coaches for the
most current information.

OCC Co-Chair
Help our school and earn a chance to win a Wii or an IPhone!
How? Contribute
to the OCC Annual Campaign by December 11.
Why? Because
it benefits your child! Last year, the
Oyster-Adams Parent Association spent $500 per year on each of your children,
to give them the "extras" that make an excellent education.
Your contribution will help pay for:
- The science fair and science lab supplies
- Teacher professional development
- Our unsurpassed arts program
- Two well-stocked bilingual libraries (at Oyster and
Adams)
- Field trips, tutoring, cultural assemblies, and
celebrations
- and so much more...
All of these "extras" set Oyster-Adams apart from other DCPS
schools. Without the generosity of
Oyster-Adams parents, our children would not have these things. Paying your share of the cost is the right
thing to do!
How
much? Our goal is 100% family participation. Gifts have ranged from $20 - $3,000. Please
give what you can. All gifts help support Oyster-Adams.
Please make checks payable to the OCC. You may mail your contribution and pledge
card or place your contribution and pledge card in the Annual Campaign box in
either the Oyster or Adams office.
The drawing for the Wii or iPhone
(winner will chose which prize they would like) will be held at the Holiday
Sing-along at the primary campus December
18th. Anyone who has made a parent/family
contribution by December 11th
will be entered.
Oyster/Adams Book Café: Food,
books, fun & Book Bingo!
Friday,
December 11, 2009
6:30 - 8:00
p.m. Oyster Campus
Please bring a food dish to feed 12-16 inspired by a
favorite children's book. Be creative
and have fun! If you are stumped, come
anyway and bring a platter of chicken nuggets. Kids always eat chicken nuggets!

Hispanic Heritage Committees

Several parents
attended the LSRT meeting before Thanksgiving to hear guest speakers discuss
parent engagement initiatives. Escuela Bolivia, a non-profit organization
based in Arlington, offers two parent engagement programs, PESA and
Participa en Mi Educación.
PESA teaches
parenting skills that improve academic achievement, family communication and
self-confidence. Escuela
Bolivia uses PESA to engage and build trust with parents before involving them
in Participa, which is a parent leadership and advocacy program.
Participa
teaches mostly immigrant families about how the U.S. education system (and
Arlington specifically) works, the benefits of parent involvement, how to
engage with teachers, how to read report cards and support their kids
academically, and how to get involved in their school and school system.
Escuela Bolivia identifies leaders through these programs and involves
them in many ways, including a Train the Trainers to replicate the
program.
One of the LSRT's
top priorities this year is to find ways to improve parent involvement at
Oyster-Adams.
