A Message from
Principal Liang-Aguirre

January 22, 2010

Dear Oyster-Adams Community:

The school is abuzz with activity these weeks with a myriad of evening meetings, special programs and assemblies. Because of scheduling conflicts, we've made some changes to the dates of events-so please review the upcoming events section of the Friday Folder carefully each week.

We are in the process of developing next year's budget, and don't forget that the lottery begins on Thursday, January 28th for spaces in next year's PK and Kinder classes. Our second OCC Community Meeting will be held this Wednesday at 6PM at the Primary Campus.  Please join us to hear updates and to share your thoughts about community issues.

Finally, I'm delighted to inform you that the Baer babies have arrived!  Sandi Baer gave birth to Asher Daniel, 7 lbs. 5 oz., and Noah Jacob Baer, 4 lbs, 12 oz. on Thursday, January 21.  Everyone is doing well.

Monica Liang Aguirre

Pilot of Parenting Program (PESA) to begin in February: Oyster-Adams is launching a pilot of a parent involvement program called PESA (Parent Expectations Support Achievement).  This program, originating from California, will be piloted with the help of Escuela Bolivia in Arlington, VA and is generously supported by the OCC.

We will be piloting this program in Spanish only and are looking for parents who are committed to participating in the 6-week program, either as participants or participants who are training to be future facilitators.  The course is offered free of charge but parents are asked to purchase the book at a cost of $30.  Full scholarships for book purchase are available.  For more information and to register, please submit his registration form. 20 seats are available.

Important Message about boxtops.  We need to collect as many boxtops as possible by Febuary 28, 2010.  Our fundraising goal for this year is $500.   A special thanks to all the dedicated teachers and families for remembering to check whether the products you buy have boxtops.  You can go to boxtops4education.com to see a list of all products and to print out collection sheets.

NEWS FROM THE LSRT

January 22, 2010

LSRT has met twice in the past two weeks to discuss our school budget priorities.  We are still waiting to get our budget from DCPS, but it looks like it should increase next year, because our projected enrollment has increased by approximately 25 students.  One very important fact parents should know about the Oyster-Adams school budget is that we spend 98% of our DCPS funds on school staff, leaving precious little money to spend on anything else.  We can do that because our parents donate generously to the OCC, which pays for all of our children's field trips, art supplies, classroom funds, OCA scholarships, leveled readers, school events, Spanish and English library books, science lab equipment, etc.  Without the level of parent support our school enjoys to fund these non-personnel expenses, we could never afford to have the staff we do in our children's classrooms.  So, please, give generously to the OCC in this year's annual campaign.  You can do so by check or online:  http://oysterbilingual.devis.com/SupportOyster/DonateOnline/
