A Message from
Principal Liang-Aguirre

January 29, 2010

Dear Oyster-Adams Community:

I'm reminded this week of the great talent and passion that all children inherently possess and I thank the tireless efforts of our staff and parents who polish our students' strengths to truly let them shine.  Some recent highlights:

The students, faculty and parents at the Primary Campus came together for the Freedom March today in commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  Sylvia Zwi, parents from the Pan African Heritage Committee and talented members of our staff, Kisha White, Laquoshea Jackson and Jimmie Gibbons organized a moving event that included excerpts form "I have a Dream," poems by Langston Hughes and many songs from the civil rights era.  Students and staff filled the rooms with beautiful music.

Our 4th/5th grade girls' basketball team is undefeated (4-0) and has secured a spot in the district playoffs!  We wish the girls and parent coaches Sally Hunsberger and Mary Farmer continued success next week!

All of our talented sixth graders performed a rendition of the ballet Romeo and Juliet in conjunction with the American Ballet Theater.  All week they have been rehearsing and preparing the stage and costumes.  Who knew our 6th graders could be so graceful?

Have a great weekend,

Monica Liang Aguirre

Family Literacy Night!

Ever wonder how you could better-help your child at home with reading, but not sure what to do?  Do you want to understand what is developmentally appropriate and/or expected for children at each grade level?  Do you need strategies to help your child progress in Spanish literacy, but you're not a Spanish speaker?  Do you struggle to get your child to read in Spanish and/or English?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, make sure you come to Literacy Night next Thursday, February 4th, from 6-8pm at the primary campus.  The event will target literacy issues and strategies for children Prek-8th Grade.

The event will feature:
  • Fair-style information tables with take-aways from grade level teams and individual teachers to help you better-understand, or better-help your child
  • Read alouds by teachers and special guests
  • Bilingual book exchange
Please contact Wendy Reeve or Christina Morado with questions, of if you'd like to help with set-up.  Parent volunteers needed for the book exchange:  wendy.reeve@dc.gov or christina.morado@dc.gov

Children's Book Exchange:  We all have books on our shelves that we no longer read, but they're books.  Good books.  We simply can't part with them!  Put your no-longer-read books into the hands of another child, and take "new" books home with you at the Book Exchange next Thursday, February 4th, from 6-8pm at the primary campus.

Bring as many books as you want (please, only books appropriate for Prek-8th grade), then select books to bring home with you.  Your lonely books will love you for giving them new readers!  Books in Spanish and English are needed.  So get busy, thin out your bookshelves this weekend, bag them up, and bring them to Literacy Night on Thursday the 4th.

Principal's Coffee:  Join Principal Monica Liang-Aguirre and Assistant Principal Ibis Villegas for an informal gathering to hear updates and engage in questions and answer.  This week we will talk about the 2010-2011 budget.  Friday, 9AM-10AM, Oyster.

Enrollment Process for 2010-2011.  The DCPS lottery has officially begun and will run through February 28th.  Please read the letter from Chancellor Rhee regarding enrollment information for next year for your child: click here.  All parents must return the "Letter of Intent" by March 19th.

Sra. Tavarez (Intermediate campus art teacher) has had to take leave early and will be out for the remainder of the school year.  We have indentified an art teacher substitute, who is going through DCPS processing, and she should begin teaching in the next week.

Spots still available for Parenting Program (PESA) to begin in February:  We will be piloting this program in Spanish only and are looking for parents who are committed to participating in the 6-week program, either as participants or participants who are training to be future facilitators.  The course is offered free of charge but parents are asked to purchase the book at a cost of $30.  Full scholarships for book purchase are available.  For more information and to register, please submit his registration form. 20 seats are available.

Oyster-Adams Kindergarten Soccer Team forming! If your kindergartener would like to play on an Oyster-Adams team as part of the Stoddert soccer league, please contact Anne-Marie Bairstow, bairstow@pailtonroad.com 202-441-9576.  Information about Stoddert soccer is available at www.stoddert.com

NEWS FROM THE OCC

January 29, 2010

Hello Oyster-Adams Community!

Community Meeting: Thank you so much to the parents who came out to the community meetings on Wednesday night. It was a small crowd but some very good questions were asked and great points and suggestions were made. I hope that more of our community will come out to our next meeting and help support the efforts of the OCC. It is very important to have the community involved and aware of all that goes on at the school. Please be on the lookout for another meeting and make it a point to attend. You'll have a good time!

Some highlights from meeting:
  •   We found out last night the DCPS has approved a full renovation of the Intermediate campus gym! Construction should begin soon and more info will come from Sra. Liang-Aguirre.
  • Sra. Liang-Aguirre may be close to hiring the AP for the Intermediate campus. We hope to hear more about this soon.
  • Sra. Tavarez (art teacher at Intermediate) is on maternity leave and her replacement for the rest of the year is in the process of being finalized and should start soon.
  • Some of you inquired about finding contact information for the Auction. Please visit the Oyster-Adams website at http://oysterbilingual.devis.com/SupportOyster/Auction/.

PAC Black History Month Celebration: The Pan-African Black History Month celebration will be held at the Primary campus on February 19 (6-8 pm). There will be a representative from the Smithsonian to present on the exhibit "The African Presence in Mexico". There will also be a drumming group and a Capoeria performance.  We need help for the various stations such as:  face painting, drum making, and mask making.  The event will be catered but we will need donations for paper products and drinks. We hope you will come out and support the great effort being put forth. Please be in touch with Stephanie Black (seblack3@comcast.net) or Monique McCray (mmccray300@aol.com).

Calling ALL volunteers: The planning of the Auction is well underway. If you would like to help out during the planning stage or on the day of the event, please don't be shy. Contact Theresa Minni via email: tminni@gmail.com. We have also started the planning process for the Raffle and Fiesta. If you would like to help out, please be in touch with Tomora Redman via email: TRedmanEncore@aol.com. Both ladies are standing by their computers waiting for your email. Please email.

If you need to be in touch with me: email - alvaradojay@gmail.com or cell phone: 202-557-9888.

Looking for language programs.  When my son was younger I took him to a Spanish language school with home stay in Mexico.  That was a great experience, but the program we went to has gone out of business as near as I can tell. I recently got a query from a parent at Key elementary (a bilingual school in Arlington) asking about similar programs for herself and her second graders this summer. If anyone has done such a program and has advice to pass along, she and I would appreciate it.  Michael Fay (Paul 7th, Sara 4th)

Postings for this space are limited to free or very low-cost events, services or products that support the mission of our school.  Please send your notice IN ENGLISH AND IN SPANISH to wendy.jacobson@verizon.net by 4:00 p.m. on Thursdays.
