A Message from Principal Liang-Aguirre
|
February 19, 2010
Dear Oyster-Adams Community:
As we settle down into our routine again and prepare
for an actual full week of school next week, I wanted to give you a brief
update on a few school developments. - New Assistant Principal: I am delighted to announce that Dr. Karen Lesmez will be joining the
Oyster-Adams staff as the new Assistant Principal for the Intermediate
Campus. Dr. Lesmez has extensive
experience working with teachers and holds a doctorate in bilingual special
education from the University of Texas at Austin. A native of Colombia, she actually did her own
student teaching at Oyster many years ago and is delighted to be returning to
the school where she started her career!
She will officially begin on March 2.
- Building a Positive School Culture and Climate: Teachers, the counseling department, parents,
the LSRT and I have been working to develop a plan for improving the overall
school culture and climate to ensure that all students and adults feel safe,
valued and respected while having high behavioral expectations for all
students. This is an area that many of
us feel needs close attention and I'm grateful for the energy that has been put
into the project thus far. We will be
sharing drafts of this plan in an upcoming meeting and look forward to your
input.
- Remodeling of the Adams gym: After suffering through many inaudible presentations at the
Intermediate Campus gymnasium, we are finally confirmed to get a complete
remodeling of the gym and stage! Improvements will be made to the overall
acoustics as well as the gym floor and stage.
We are even getting a new curtain!
Construction will begin, hopefully, in the next month with the bulk
being completed over spring break. I
will give a detailed description of the scope of work once I have it.
Finally, February
madness is strong at Oyster-Adams thanks to the 4th/5th
girls basketball team. As the #1 seed in their region, they hope to
continue their string of victories in the regional playoffs this Tuesday,
2/23 at 3:45PM at Francis Jr. High.
Come cheer them on as they take the next step in finishing what
they have started: AN UNDEFEATED SEASON!
Have
a wonderful weekend,
M. Liang Aguirre

Playing
outside again: Thanks to our custodians, OPEFM, DCPS,
Councilmember Cheh's office and parents, our students were able to play
outdoors today on a limited basis. Our
new turf at Adams had to be cleaned carefully
and the large quantities of snow required the assistance from several agencies
working together to prepare the playing areas at both campuses. Please send your child to school with
appropriate winter gear as we hope to get them outside as much as possible
again. Please note that there is still
snow on the ground in certain areas and only children with boots will be
permitted to walk in the snow.
DCPS Teaching and
Learning Framework: This fall, DCPS
introduced a new Teaching and Learning Framework to clearly outline what the
District believes solid instruction looks like. Join DCPS leadership, classroom
teachers and other staff to learn and talk about effective teaching and
learning. The meeting for Ward 3 will be
held at our very own Oyster-Adams Primary Campus. Join DCPS's Peggy O'Brien, Chief of Family
and Public Engagement and other DCPS parents to learn more about DCPS's efforts
to bring excellent teaching to all students.
Tuesday, February 23 at 6:30PM.
PAC Black History Month Celebration: Join us on Friday from 6-8PM for food, music, information and entertainment at
Oyster-Adams' annual Black History Month Celebration! Read more about how to help and volunteer
under the OCC section of this Bulletin.
Thank you to all members of the Pan African Heritage Committee for
organizing this fabulous event.
Parent Campaign Update: Can you make a donation to
the parent campaign? The amount you give is up to you but we would like to have
100% participation of the Oyster-Adams families. Right now we are not
close to 50% of families. It's never too late to make a contribution. We want
to see the percentage of families participating grow and grow. You can donate
via cash, check, money order, credit card, debit card, pay pal. You name it, we
take it! Remember that this is the money that helps to fund DC Scores, classroom
funds, music program, Echo Hill trip, Raffle, Fiesta, tutoring, transportation
to field trips and many other events and resources needed at the school. We are
one community and need to support each other in our education cause. To make a
contribution, you can use the donation boxes in the
offices in both campuses, make a donation on-line at http://oysterbilingual.devis.com/SupportOyster/DonateOnline/,
or mail a donation to "OCC Annual Campaign, Oyster Campus, 2801 Calvert Street NW, Washington

Oyster-Adams Bilingual School is
pleased to announce the 2010 Annual Auction.
We will hold an online auction of a variety of items from March 15 -
April 17, 2010. On the evening of April 17, student art, larger and higher-ticket
items will be auctioned off at the live auction at what promises to be a fun
and lively event.
We are aiming
for 100% participation, with every family contributing at least three
items. We need your help to meet our
goal.
Parent Donations can include anything of value such as tickets to
sporting events or entertainment venues; a stay at a vacation home; homemade
treats; free babysitting; chess lessons or dinners.
Teacher Donations consistently raise a significant amount of money
at the auction. In the past, teachers have donated outings to museums, puppet
shows, bedtime stories and much, much more.
Business Donations from local retailers, restaurants, salons,
banks, realtors, dance studios, and others are critical to the success of this
fundraising effort.
We hope that you will consider
donating an auction item. We are expecting 300 attendees at our live
auction and the online auction will reach into the homes of hundreds of area
residents. The local publicity and appreciation you will receive is invaluable
to businesses.
Donations are due by March 15,
2010
All contributions will be listed
on our auction website and you will receive a receipt for your tax-deductible
contribution. If you have any questions, please contact the Auction Committee
