Today is the last day of the 3rd Advisory period, which means that the school year is ¾ complete. 
 
Please don't forget to return your "intent to enroll" form by April 6.
 
I wish everyone a safe spring vacation filled with family time, an adventure or two, and some great books to read.

DC-CAS RESOURCE FOR 3-8th graders:  Information was sent home on Thursday on Study Island (www.studyisland.com), the new on-line program we have purchased for all 3-8 graders to help prepare for the DC-CAS.  All students have their own username and password:

Teachers have set up assignments for students to work on over the vacation. (It is accessible from anywhere via the internet).  Also, the Adams Computer Lab will be open daily from 10AM-12PM over the vacation to provide access to the internet if needed.  Please work with your child and monitor their progress.  For more information, click here.
 
MIDDLE SCHOOL PLANS will continue to develop throughout the spring.  Please click here for a summary of plans. 
 
Principal's Coffee:  Join Principal Monica Liang-Aguirre, Assistant Principal Ibis Villegas and new Assistant Principal, Karen Lesmez on Friday, April 9 for the Principal's Coffee at 9:00AM at the Intermediate Campus (Adams).  We will be discussing programmatic plans for next year.  We will also have an informal meet and greet for Karen Lesmez between 8:30-9:00AM.
 
CLASS PHOTOS were taken on Thursday. You can order a copy until April 9 ($13).  Please come to the office if you need a form.
 
Campamento DEDOS-Spanish language Camp.  Oyster-Adams is ready to launch the Summer Campus DEDO en Español, July 6-30, 2010.  The theme will be: Campamento DEDOS en Español: Travels through Latin America.  The weekly music, art and drama sessions will focus on the following:
  • Week 1:  The Carribean
  • Week 2:  The Indigenous of Central America
  • Week 3:  The Amazon of South America
  • Week 4:  La Conquista de Mexico
Registration will open on Thursday, April 8.  Ms. Villegas and Ms. Kleinmann will be available to answer any questions from 5:00-6:30PM.  Come learn more about our Spanish immersion camp.
 
Student Winners!  While we were all snowed in during the month of February, some of our sixth graders were at home writing entries for an annual essay contest sponsored by the National Capital Lawyers Auxiliary.  Alexandra Littleton, Matthew Smee and Ben Topa were selected as winners for their thoughts on the topic "You Make a Difference," a reflection on the relationship between children and the law. They will be honored on Friday, May 7th at a ceremony at the United States Supreme Court.
 
Free Parenting Class:  Columbia Heights/Shaw Family Support Collaborative is offering a free, 8-week Parenting Education class starting Thursday, March 25th 2010. The course willbe presented in English and willfocus on managing your children's behavior, improving communication, helpingchildrensucceed in school, and protecting children from violence. The class will take place at Shaw/Garnett Patterson Middle School 2001 10TH St, NW on Thursdays at 6 P.M. To register, call Athena at 202-319-7599.
 
Pennies for Patients update.  Thanks to the PK-3rd grade students, our school raised $2,408.41 for "Pennies for Patients".  Thank you for supporting The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society!

Happy Spring everyone! I wish everyone a wonderful Spring Break! I hope you will enjoy the days with family and friends, and if you have to work, please go outside for a walk if it's nice day. Take a moment to clear your mind.

OCC Baby News: Cristina Garza de Faz, Spanish Secretary, had a surprise arrival. Santiago Xavier came to this world on March 22nd at 12:28 pm, healthy and handsome at 7 pounds 6 ounces, 19 inches. Cristina, Xavier, Jimena, Elena and Santiago Faz are doing well. Congratulations!
 
We will need help in translating our minutes. If you are able to help once, twice or all the time, please let me know so we can always put our minutes in both English and Spanish.

OCC Budget News: We will begin the process of putting a budget together for the 2010-2011 school year. We are currently accepting budget request. Please visit the OCC section of our website for the budget form if you need to submit a request. The deadline for all committees and individuals to submit their requests is March 31. Please email your request to me (alvaradojay@gmail.com). I must receive the form in order for funding to be considered for a particular committee or project.
