A Message from
Principal Liang-Aguirre

April 15, 2010

Dear Oyster-Adams Community:

Construction work has finally begun in earnest in the gym/auditorium at Adams! Parents, we need your help. We have always asked that there are no pick-ups at 3:15PM from the parking lot area. However, there are still several parents who are going to the back to wait for their children. Because of the added congestion and limited parking due to the construction vehicles and materials, additional cars at dismissal are dangerous and causing difficulties for the construction process. We are now closing the parking lot between 3:00-3:45PM.

Also, with the construction vehicles added to our parking lot, there is NO VISITOR parking available in the parking lot during the school day. You may only pull in if you will be no more than 10 minutes. Please be courteous and leave your name and cell phone number on the dashboard of your car so we can contact you if you are blocking someone. Remember, there will be no access to the parking lot between 3-3:45PM.

Oyster-Adams will be in DC-CAS testing mode, GOING FOR THE GOLD, for the next two weeks. All 3-8th graders will be participating in testing daily beginning on Tuesday, April 20 until April 29. 4th, 5th, 7th and 8th graders will have testing on Friday the 30th.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Monica Liang Aguirre
Principal

ANNOUNCEMENTS &

REMINDERS

NO SCHOOL TOMORROW, APRIL 16!

Week of April 19-23:

Tuesday-Friday
  • DC-CAS Testing, grades 3-8
Tuesday, April 20
  • OCC Board Meeting, 6PM, PRIMARY CAMPUS

UPCOMING EVENTS

April 26-30: Week two of DC-CAS

May 3-7: Elementary Science Fair

May 3-7: Teacher Appreciation Week

May 7: Principal's Coffee

May 8: ¡FIESTA!

May 10: Oyster-Adams Celebration of Athletes

DC-CAS Testing Schedule April 20-30:

This year, we will be implementing a different, more student-friendly testing schedule. Rather than two sections per day, schools were given the choice of administering only one section per day, thereby shortening the amount of time students spend testing daily and hopefully increasing their focus and stamina. Of course, the downfall is that testing lasts longer over all.

Please help us help your child by ensuring that he/she:
  • Gets a good night of sleep every night (9-11 hours is recommended for 5-12 year olds.)
  • Eats a healthy breakfast every morning.
  • Comes in with a positive attitude to his or her best.
  • Comes to school ON TIME and everyday unless he/she is sick.
The testing schedule is as follows:

Tuesday 4/20: Reading Section 1
Wednesday 4/21: Math Section 1
Thursday 4/22: Reading Section 2
Friday 4/23: Math Section 2
Monday 4/26: Reading Section 3
Tuesday 4/27: Math Section 3
Wednesday 4/28: Reading Section 4
Thursday 4/29: Math Section 4
Friday 4/30: Writing (grades 4 & 7), Science (grades 5 & 8)

Hiring Season Has Begun at Oyster-Adams: We are starting to interview for anticipated openings for teachers and staff for next year. We are looking for parents who are interested in participating in the interview committee. This is a short-term commitment, but we must have individuals who can commit to participating fully throughout the process. Interested parents must be available every Tuesday from 2PM-5PM through May 25 (6 weeks). We will devise another summer committee in June. Ideal parents are: bilingual (we conduct interviews in both languages) and have hiring experience. If you are interested, please contact the principal at: monica.liang-aguirre@dc.gov or through either campus office.

Emancipation Day Celebrations:  Friday, April 16, is the 148th anniversary of DC Emancipation Day, the day that Abraham Lincoln signed the District of Columbia Compensated Emancipation Act, which freed the last 3,100 enslaved people in Washington, DC, nine months before the more famous Emancipation Proclamation took effect elsewhere.

If you would like information about this local holiday, or if you are looking for activities to commemorate the day, please go to <http://www.dc.gov/emancipationday> .

The raffle season has started, and we need your help! The annual raffle is one of the OCC´s main fundraising efforts and is one of the few in which your child can really work with you to help raise money for the school. Last year, the hard work of Oyster-Adams parents and students brought in over $15,000!

Your child has been given today an envelope containing 20 tickets to be sold at $1 each. Inside the envelope there is a letter enclosed for you to read with a few reminders about the selling of the tickets. Once your child sells all his-her tickets please ask for more. The top sellers will get lots of incentives including a pizza party, treats on Fridays and a special lunch with the Principal! Middle school students will compete for an Ipod shuffle!

IMPORTANT: Sold stubs and money collected need to be returned to the classroom teachers on Monday, April 26, and each day from May 3-7. Parent volunteers will collect the sold tickets and money from each classroom. Please do not send your child with money and stubs any other day of the week as we don´t have enough volunteers to do the collection every day of the week and we cannot keep money in the classrooms.

Please contact Denise Senecal at denisehsenecal@gmail.com or Bev Paul at bpaul@gordley.com with any questions. Thank you for making the raffle fun, safe and successful!
