A Message from Principal Liang-Aguirre
| April 26, 2010
Dear Oyster-Adams Community: Congratulations to Theresa Minni and her team of parent
volunteers who pulled off a fabulous auction last weekend that raised essential
funds for our school's programming. Without you, our school couldn't offer the special programs we do and I
thank you, on behalf of our students and staff, for your kind generosity. Testing has gone very smoothly this past week for our 3-8th
graders thanks to the impeccable planning of Assistant Principal, Ms. Villegas,
the solid implementation of our staff, and, of course, the hard work and focus
of our students. Students are even more
motivated and focused thanks to early morning exercise fun with our PE
teachers, Ms. Barnes and Sra. Martinez, and with the privilege of chewing gum
during testing. Students should rest up
for the grand finale next week! I
received an overwhelmingly low (zero!) response from parents about the teacher
interview committee. Perhaps it was the
time commitment or maybe it doesn't seem like an important task-but keep in
mind that helping to hire the BEST TEACHERS FOR OYSTER-ADAMS is one of the most
valuable contributions you can make to the school. Why? Because...
Teacher effectiveness is the "single biggest factor influencing gains
on achievement, an influence bigger than race, poverty, parent's education, or
any of the other factors that are often thought to doom children to failure." -W.L Sanders and J.C. Rivers
Please
consider joining the committee and volunteering every Tuesday from 2-5PM until
May 25th to participate in the first round of interviews. If you're interested and available, please
contact me through either campus office or at: monica.liang-aguirre@dc.gov. Have a great week, Monica Liang Aguirre Principal

Summer School Changes: We have exciting
construction plans at Adams for this summer that include the installation of an

construction, Summer School has been moved from Adams to Francis-Stevens. Click here for a letter from DCPS about some important changes regarding summer
school. Please note that
Extended School Year (ESY) for our special education students will be held at
Oyster-Adams' Primary Campus. For more
information, please see Ms. Manzano at evelyn.manzano@dcgov. Creating a Bully-Free Oyster-Adams. Bullying is a national and international concern that is
currently in the spotlight due to the recent horrific news reports related to
it. Sadly, we are not immune to bullying behavior at Oyster-Adams and have been
working hard with our teachers and counseling staff to minimize its negative
effects at both campuses. It is imperative that school be a safe place for everyone. Despite
our efforts, we feel that a more systematic and comprehensive approach is
needed to truly establish a safe environment for all. With
from DCPS' Office of Youth Engagement, we have
expanded our prevention strategies in an effort to build more trust within our
school community. This community-wide approach involves parents and the larger community in addition to all students and staff inside the school building. This
comprehensive approach is considered best practice by bullying prevention
experts.
We
will be piloting a community-wide bully prevention program in May at the
Intermediate Campus (Adams). We hope to
expand it to the Primary Campus in September of next school year. Beginning in
May, we will be speaking with each class and every staff member at the
Intermediate Campus to ensure a consistent response to reports of bullying. We
will focus on the importance of the larger community and the role of the
bystander in preventing bullying. Our goal is to create a community where we
all feel responsible for stopping bullying.
Our
work with the Office of Youth Engagement is on-going and we invite you to learn
more about our plan at a meeting for parents on Thursday May 6th from 6-7pmin the Art
Room at the Intermediate Campus. We welcome
you as partners in our community-wide effort and count on you to continue the
bully prevention education at home.Please
contact our social worker, Melissa Shaw, at 202-673-7311 with any questions or
comments. Elementary School

April 26, 2010
LSRT will meet on April 28 to review a family engagement
framework that shows how schools can engage families as partners to improve
their children's learning. From this
framework, we will develop our vision and plans for family engagement at
Oyster-Adams in SY 2010-2011 and beyond.
LSRT elections will be held in late May or early June this
year, depending on when DCPS finalizes its LSRT guidelines. Please consider running for a position on the
LSRT. The LSRT meets monthly and is
comprised of teachers, parents, administrators, and community
representatives. It exists to advise the
Principal about Oyster-Adams' strategic and budgetary matters. Those interested in running will be asked to
submit short bios summarizing their relevant professional and volunteer
experiences, so please stay tuned to these announcements for further
information about LSRT elections.
