A Message from Principal Liang-Aguirre
| April 30, 2010
Dear Oyster-Adams Community: When I was in 7th grade, I had a French teacher
who, as it turns out, had a profound impact on the professional path I have
chosen. Madame Seiler, as she was
called, was warm and caring, energetic, creative, allowed us to pick a French
name (I chose Jacqueline), had us work in collaborative groups and taught us a
foreign language by having us use
it. We had French class at the end of
the day during 8th period-clearly a difficult time slot for 7th
grade- yet we always felt engaged and active throughout the lesson and the last
bell of the day would ring before we knew it. I didn't know it at the time, but Mme. Seiler instilled in me not only a
love for learning languages, but also impressed upon me as a student what good
teaching is. I continued to study French and German throughout high
school and ultimately decided to study Spanish in my first year of
college. I endured a variety of language
professors in my student years-from the terrifying one whose class I dreaded
(but where I learned to prepare my homework carefully), the grammar czar (who
finally made me understand grammar-in any language), to the German professor
that actually fell asleep during her own class. Then upon graduating, as I prepared for my own classes as a high school
Spanish teacher in NYC, I often thought back to Mme. Seiler and mimicked my
lessons on the strategies and activities we had done in her class many years
prior. Next week is Teacher Appreciation Week. I always say that teaching is the most
difficult job in the world and this week I ask you to reflect on the passion,
commitment, and many, many long hours that your children's teachers put into
their classes every day. I am so proud of our teaching staff: the teachers, the aides and all of our
specialists and support staff who pour passion and soul into Oyster-Adams every
day. Not every teacher will be every
child's "Madame Seiler," but every teacher will at one point be someone's
inspiration, coach, homework trainer and, perhaps, path changer. Please take the time next week to say
"gracias." Have a fabulous weekend, Monica Liang Aguirre Principal PS: Thank you for
your responses for the teacher hiring committee!

Gym Update: The elementary grades science fair will be held in our partially
remodeled gym. They have stopped work
for the week to allow us to use the gym, so notice the progress: The tiles and grout have been deeply cleaned,
the radiator grates are missing because they are being refurbished to their
beautiful original bronze, the woodwork on the stage has been stripped and the
floor is in the process of being replaced, the ornamental and stage plaster is
being restored and the old stage rigging has been removed. Notice a small square patch on the gym floor
in front of the stage on the right hand side. This is a sanded patch of the
floor and gives you an idea of what our entire floor will look like once the
maple has been refurbished. Work will
pick up again right after the fair.

The time has come for the OCA Spring Fundraiser Event and Raffle! As
stated previously in the OCA meeting, this event will take place on May 21, 2010
at the Swiss Embassy, in Washington, DC. This event will provide us parents a break
from our hectic days with an evening in good company, with great food, and also
the opportunity to win prizes! This event helps the OCA raise funds
for the OCA Scholarship Fund, a
program which provides support to families that need the services that OCA
provides, but who are unable to afford such services. Because of previous
generous donations that we received, this year the OCA Scholarship Fund supports
23% of the students that participate in Oyster Creative Activities
(OCA). All of the proceeds collected in
this event will be directed towards the OCA Scholarship Fund. We request your
generosity in donating items or services for the raffle. Last year parents
donated over 30 items and services, such as cookbooks, facials, and gift
certificates, among others, from local businesses. If you are unable to donate
any items or services, please consider in helping us raise funds for this
activity. We can provide you with a template of a fundraising letter. You may
reach out to local businesses, whom are always happy to support local schools.
If you would like to donate any item
or service to the raffle, please contact Charlotte Valle, at charlotte_valle@verizon.net or
Lydia Borland, at lydiaborland@gmail.com.
Thank you for all of your
support!
