A Message from
Principal Liang-Aguirre

May 7, 2010

Dear Oyster-Adams Community:

Congratulations to our elementary scientists who filled the Adams gym with curiosity and exploration this week.  Under Ms. Welch's direction, the elementary science fair was a great success thanks to many parent volunteers and collaboration from teachers.

I learned a lot from our young scientists including these important discoveries:  females tend to have a better sense of smell than males, don't drink the water from the McDonald's close to Oyster, turtles are more vain than hedgehogs, cheddar cheese melts faster than goat cheese, Energizer batteries really do last longer, and don't water your plants with urine. Where else can you make these discoveries?  Regardless of the problem students were trying to solve, all were involved in the process of inquiry, observation and coming to a conclusion. Thank you for supporting your children in the science fair.

Enrollment forms are beginning to trickle in.  Please make sure you return your enrollment packet as soon as possible and no later than June 1.  If you are not planning on enrolling your child at Oyster-Adams next year, please notify the office so we can offer the spot to students on the waitlist.

See you at the FIESTA on Saturday and to all the mothers out there, may Mother's Day have at least a few moments of peace and quiet... enjoy!

Monica Liang-Aguirre
Principal

OCA NEWS

May 7, 2010

The time has come for the OCA Spring Fundraiser Event and Raffle! As stated previously in the OCA meeting, this event will take place on May 21, 2010 at the Swiss Embassy, in Washington, DC. This event will provide us parents a break from our hectic days with an evening in good company, with great food, and also the opportunity to win prizes!

This event helps the OCA raise funds for the OCA Scholarship Fund, a program which provides support to families that need the services that OCA provides, but who are unable to afford such services. Because of previous generous donations that we received, this year the OCA Scholarship Fund supports 23% of the students that participate in Oyster Creative Activities (OCA).

All of the proceeds collected in this event will be directed towards the OCA Scholarship Fund. We request your generosity in donating items or services for the raffle. Last year parents donated over 30 items and services, such as cookbooks, facials, and gift certificates, among others, from local businesses. If you are unable to donate any items or services, please consider in helping us raise funds for this activity. We can provide you with a template of a fundraising letter. You may reach out to local businesses, whom are always happy to support local schools.

If you would like to donate any item or service to the raffle, please contact Charlotte Valle, at charlotte_valle@verizon.net or Lydia Borland, at lydiaborland@gmail.com.

Thank you for all of your support!
