A Message from Principal Liang-Aguirre
| June 11, 2010
Dear Oyster-Adams Community: As we celebrate
Carole Whelan's retirement this weekend, we are also preparing to send off
Oyster-Adams' second class of 8th graders. These young men and women, who just returned
from an adventure-filled four day camping trip, are poised for academic
greatness as they enter the next phase of their scholarly career in some of the
city's finest secondary schools. Next
year we will have students attend: Woodrow Wilson Senior High School Duke Ellington School for the Arts Washington International School Maret School Bell Multicultural High School McKinley Technology High School Edmund Burke School School Without Walls Josip Broz Tito High School,
Macedonia
Paint Branch High School, Montgomery
County St. John's College High School This group of 8th graders holds a special place
in our history as this is the first class that has students born and raised at
Oyster-Adams. We have seven students who have spent their entire academic
careers at Oyster-Adams, starting in Pre-Kinder with Ms. Kovin and Sra.
Saavedra. Another eight have been with
us since Kindergarten. Anyone who knows
these students-as well as their classmates that have joined them along the
journey over the past 10 years-knows that these Oyster-Adams graduates
symbolize the true essence and mission of the school. They are beautifully bilingual and
bi-literate, represent a global perspective beyond their years and are used to
a level of academic rigor that will ensure them success in high school. We send them off with pride and admiration. As we bid this special group of students farewell, we will
prepare to build up our new class of 8th graders, transition next
year's 4th graders to Adams and welcome the newest class of Pre-Kindergartners
at Oyster. And so continues the cycle of
schools: the ebb and flow of new beginnings, bitter-sweet farewells and
countless hours of hard work and laughter as we pursue this labor of love
called education. Have a fabulous
weekend. Monica Liang-Aguirre Principal

for next year? We are still
missing significant numbers of enrollment packets for next year from returning
students. Please don't risk losing your
spot and make sure you enroll by June 22.
Class Assignments
for Next Year: As the year rapidly comes to close, the number one
question that parents have on their minds is: Who will be my child's teachers
next year? The teachers, the
counseling staff and administration are all finalizing class groupings next
year and are still weighing the option of looping (keeping the current class
together) for K, 2nd and 4th grades. We are balancing the benefits of this with
any anticipated changes in staffing. As
always, you will find out your child's specific class and teachers at the end
of the summer, right before school starts. Please keep in mind
that we not accept requests for specific teachers-so please don't ask! J However, if you feel so
inclined, don't hesitate to let us know about any specific needs of your child
and the type of teacher and classroom environment that would allow your child
to thrive. We always look to do what's
best for our students and appreciate your input and support. You can leave a note in the front office or
email comments to: monica.liang-aguirre@dc.gov.
TURN IN YOUR
BOOKS! Look under your beds, on your
bookshelves, in the car...It is time to turn in all library and classroom books.
Please hunt around your house and return all books that say Oyster Adams
in them. Thank you for your cooperation! Campamento DeDos:Registration for the Oyster-Adams Spanish language summer camp 'DeDos'
continues for K-5 students! You may register your child on a per week basis or
for July 6-30. Checks must be made out to Hoop Ed.

OCA parents wish to thank the OCC for continued support of
our scholarship program. Scholarships permit nearly 30 Oyster-Adams students to
participate in OCA, our highly regarded after-school program. OCA parents
strive to make our program available to all Oyster-Adams students, regardless
of means. Parents who pay the full tuition of $280 a month per child subsidize
students from families who are unable to pay the full amount. We also hold two
fund raisers a year. Still, that is not enough, and we count on the greater community
to help us out, particularly in these economic times. During the 2009-10 school year, OCA has provided
after-school care to 150 students - 23 percent of Oyster-Adams children. Few programs supported by OCC reach that many
students on a regular basis. More than
18 percent of our students receive financial assistance from the OCA
Scholarship Fund, at different levels based on a family's capacity to pay. The average scholarship amount this year is
50 percent of tuition; the scholarship range is from 20 percent to 80
percent. The total amount dedicated to
scholarships in 2009-10 is $39,700. Because of the recession, this is a huge
increase from what we provided in recent years. By way of comparison, in 2007-08,
OCA granted scholarships totaling $25,250;
in 2008-09, when the recession began, that figure rose to $32,000. In 2009-10,
OCA was delighted that OCC funded $15,000 of the scholarships; OCA paid the
remaining $24,700. We raised about $11,500 at our fund raisers and paid the
rest through tuition subsidies and with money from our operating budget
(something we cannot afford to continue doing). Some OCC members have asked for more transparency about who
receives the scholarships. Even OCA officers and board members don't know the
identities of scholarship recipients. We guard their privacy carefully, which
is the right thing to do. The recipients are selected through an independent
process, by people who are not part of the O-A community, based solely on need.
Their financial information, but not their names, is included in reports to OCA
parents at public meetings. Here is some information about OCA: OCA provides a safe, creative, learning environment to
Oyster-Adams students from 3:15 to 6 p.m. after school and all day when there
are no classes and the buildings are open (e.g. parent-teacher conference days,
teacher training days). Our bilingual program staff provides students fun and
educational activities and homework assistance. This is especially helpful for families in which parents have limited
ability in either English or Spanish. OCA also offers a program of enrichment
classes, including instruction in sports and the arts, to OCA students and
others in the wider O-A community. Students in the DCPS after-school program
have especially taken advantage of this opportunity. OCA parents are proud that our program is open to our entire
O-A community, regardless of ability to pay. We have worked hard to ensure
equal access and to prevent a two-tiered after-school system. We very much
appreciate OCC's support in this endeavor. The OCA Board Jodi Enda and Talita Ribera, co-chairs
