A Message from
Principal Liang-Aguirre

September 6, 2010

Dear Oyster-Adams Families:

With August over and the DC-BAS testing this week, the "beginning" of the school year is already passed and we're in the thick of things again.

Thank you to those of you who attended my presentation on our DC-CAS results.  We had an interesting discussion on our performance, factors influencing it and how our scores compare with those of our neighboring schools.  I will be providing the information in writing shortly.

No sooner have we finished discussing the results of DC-CAS, are we poised to start the benchmark testing for this year. All throughout the District, schools will be administering an assessment called the DC Benchmark Assessment System (DC BAS) to students in grades 3-10 from September 7-9. All students in 3-8th grades at Oyster-Adams are scheduled to participate in the assessment as soon as school begins on that Tuesday and Wednesday. Thursday the 9th will be make-up day. (Note that the observance of Rosh Hashanah should not interfere with DC-BAS testing if the student is present on Tuesday and Wednesday.  Please call the school if you have any questions).

This assessment is an important component of our educational program.  It will provide us with information on how our students are progressing on each of the categories in reading and math that are assessed on the end-of-year state exam, the DC Comprehensive Assessment System (DC CAS). This first testing (Test P) is an assessment of our students' mastery of the last grade's standards.

If you have any questions regarding the DC BAS assessment or your child's subsequent results, please contact either Sandi Baer at the Intermediate Campus or Rick Quinones at the Primary Campus. You may also contact the Testing Coordinator, Ibis Villegas. Remember that all emails are: firstname.lastname@dc.gov.

Please make a special effort to ensure that your child(ren) get enough rest and eat a nutritious breakfast on testing days. They also need to bring two # 2 pencils and a book to read in the event that they finish earlier than their peers. Together, we can make testing a positive stress-free experience for every child.

After-school programs are already starting.  Please read the bulletin below to find out some of the many wonderful options we have for your children.  More activities and clubs will start in the upcoming weeks and month.

I hope you have enjoyed the long weekend!

M. Liang-Aguirre
Principal

Fall sports season is here!

How do you sign up?
All students are welcome (and encouraged!) to participate in school sports. You do not need to sign up your child for a sport in advance, simply have them come topractice for the sport they would like to play (schedule listed below).

Mandatory Physical Forms.  Any student that participates in a school athletic program needs to have a current DCPS physical form on file that has been performed within one year of the beginning of the athletic season in which they will be competing. The physical form to be filled out was sent out in the school registration packet this summer and also can be found on line at http://dcps.dc.gov/DCPS/Files/downloads/Learn-About-Schools/Enrollment/DCPS-Enrollment-Forms-Health-Certificate-3-2010.pdf.  Your child may come to the first weeks of practice while you are getting this paperwork completed, but they will not be allowed to compete in any games without completed medical forms.

NEWS FROM THE SCHOOL ADVISORY BOARD
(formerly LSRT)

September 6, 2010

Correction:  In last week's announcements we listed the current SAB members but we failed to mention a very important member of the group, Liz Fallace.  Liz is the proud mother of Genevieve, Audrey and Marguerite. She is a long standing and vital member of the OA community and we are lucky to have her working with us.

The SAB held its first meeting on Thursday Sept 2.  The meeting notes will be on-line for your viewing pleasure shortly.

Missed your opportunity to participate in the last SAB meeting?  Don't worry; you will have another opportunity on Wed 9/22/10 in the Teacher's Lounge at the lower campus.  The main focus will be the comprehensive school plan.
